That day Patrick took Daya away from Pete because he didn't want her to get hurt anymore. 6 years later Pete shows up at Patrick's house wanting to to see Daya and wants to be part of her life again. Patrick doesn't want Pete to be in Daya's life. Pete is willing to do anything to get Daya's, Patrick's, Joe's, and Andy's trust back, but Pete's past keeps catching up to him. One of them being he gets stage fright easily, another being his parents are crazy religious and wouldn't approve of it. He mentioned it once and they sent him to a private lutheran school. Now, the only way he can come close to expressing himself is through praise band- even then he holds himself back to the point of sounding mediocre, but just good enough to be better than the other people that auditioned.
