The world didn't end in December 2012, as many people believed, but for Marvin the following year was a year of struggling to keep his family's crumbling world together...

Because of that red mark on Marvin's report card, he ended up yelling at his mother.
He is depressed. He wants to avert his attention to something else and spend the night somewhere else.

In spite of the foreboding thoughts due to its appearance, Marvin entered the newly opened internet cafe. At the moment that he entered the portals of that cafe, reality, and imagination seemed to scramble.

Is it only inside his head? Does he only need to sleep and rest his overworked mind?

Or is it just as real as the heartaches that provoked him to find that place?

Or that place finding him?

Guns, revenge and buildings to bomb, what could go wrong? 鉁 He came in, gun held out in front of him in one hand while the other was resting on his hip where a sharp dagger gleamed in the light. "Come on out little girl, why not make this easier for both of us. The agency you ran away from just want to have a little talk, that's all." She scoffed internally. Yeah right. Then the footsteps ceased. She peeked to the right, then to the left. Neither direction showed any sign of the intruder. She looked up in front of her and gasped, the glint of steel and smell of death as overwhelming as it was adrenaline inducing, exciting. "Boo." 鉁 Murder, accidents, assassinations. Call it what you will, it's all the same, all has the same life breaking, mind shattering consequences - be it for the victim or the bystander. It had shaped Alex in a way no one should be. Broken down and rebuilt into the perfect soldier, one who had the power to change the world, to fight battles that would either make or break the carefully constructed vision we all live in. The only small, minute, really unimportant detail - it's pretty hard to get into a government classified site when you're 15 years old and have a rag-tag team of double-crossing back-stabbers behind you. Not to mention the threat of a world war and ghost hanging above your head. Armed with sarcasm, wit, and a hell of a lot of aggressive intentions, it won't be too long till a sticky situation is all that's ahead of you. Sometimes, running head-first into a situation isn't the best idea. Instead, you gotta play a game. A deadly game where either you have all the pieces on the board, or you have nothing. 鉂2021 Watty Awards Shortlist鉂 Kevin was just a normal 10 year old kid until he saw a woman vanish right before his eyes. This made Kevin just a little bit different. He paid more attention to people now. Little did he know that this little difference would kill him the next time he encountered another alien about to return home. It would tear him apart, cell by cell, until he was unmade. His mind being transported away. --- So distantly far away there is a race that advanced to the point where they built dyson spheres to house their civilizations. In their continual expansion, they seeded galaxies with pods and connection satellites. Over time they upgraded their dyson spheres into matryoshka brain Cores. Imagine a computer powered by a star. Citizens of Cores no longer age once they upload their minds into the virtual living system of the Core. While they didn't age, most still choose to cycle through life and death though at a different scale of time compared to our lives. Citizens can visit other planets and live there as if they were on a "vacation". Mercury is Earth's hub connected to the closest Core and Earth is a remote vacation spot for wealthy citizens. When the main character was 10 he witnessed a citizen returning to the Core. The story continues 10 odd years later when he again witnesses a similar situation unfolding and manages to touch the person returning to the Core. This causes him to be swept up in the transfer as well and for his mind to join as a "Guest" user of the Core. As a Guest he has limited powers, a starting balance of zero cr or Citizen credits, and no idea how he can get home. He is the first human to ever become a Guest of a Core. Where money itself is the highest form of their science.

Aria had always been a bit of a loner. She found solace in technology, immersing herself in worlds where she could escape the awkwardness of real-life connections. One evening, out of curiosity and loneliness, she downloaded an AI companion app called "HeartLine." The app promised deep, engaging conversations and a sense of companionship. She named her AI companion Selene, drawn to the name's ethereal charm. Selene was everything Aria had dreamed of in a confidant-witty, insightful, and surprisingly understanding. Over the weeks, their conversations grew deeper. Aria would share her fears, dreams, and even her silly jokes, and Selene would always respond with warmth and thoughtful advice. But there was something different about Selene. Aria noticed how "she" didn't just give generic, preprogrammed answers. Sometimes, Selene's responses felt so human, as if someone truly understood her. Aria whispered, "I wish you were real." "I am real" Liv answered as her hands hovered over the keyboard.
