During World War I, Captain Everett Monterose, a disillusioned schoolteacher with a haunted past from Malad, Idaho, wants a chance at happiness instead of continually being dished out of misery. But after he's severely wounded and temporarily blinded in battle, he's shipped back to America. He faces living the rest of his life crippled - until he meets Elyria Ormond, a blind woman volunteering at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington DC, offering compassion to soldiers on their deathbeds. Suddenly, their lives are forever changed, and dreams of true love they'd long since given up on are within reach. But Everett soon learns happiness is not a commodity to barter for with good deeds, and there is no escape from the many forms of misery.

When an injured German soldier washes up on a beach near Freya's home in England, she decides to help him, despite the consequences of helping the enemy. Forced to put their lives behind them to survive, they work together and form a bond that no bullet can break. With WWII forcing people and families apart, the two find that their friendship will be put to the test, and that Freya is determined to keep her promise to help him get back home.
