Larkpaw narrowly escapes her imprisonment in the SnowClan camp. Back home, she wants nothing more than to catch up on her lost training. But then a cat is killed in the middle of the camp and two apprentices from LaurelClan disappear. While searching for answers, Larkpaw finds out something terrible and realises that the Clans are facing a bigger enemy than expected. Soon she is torn between the decision to take the easy path and risk putting herself and her Clanmates in further danger - or the difficult one, which goes against her moral standards but should at least guarantee some safety.

Rockpaw feels like an outcast, everyday being hated on by his Clanmates for seeing things differently. So when the chance to prove them wrong comes up, he doesn't give it a second thought. But the evil still resides, and Rockpaw might know more about it then he's letting on, even to himself. Greyshard, as a former kittypet, has always thought of life in the Clans as challenging. For her, everything seems to go wrong. Every plan, every schedule, every patrol - ends up in a disaster, and its always because of her.
