I have lived most of my life in fragments, with doctor visits, soft-spoken condolences, and eyes that never meet mine for too long. I'm the girl with the oxygen tank; the one people smile at out of pity and then pass by.

We were kids when the world still felt infinite before the sickness settled in my lungs before he learned how to look away.
Before I stopped expecting him to stay.
He was my beginning. my next-door everything. Until middle school swallowed him whole and spit out someone colder. Someone popular. Someone who stopped saying my name like it meant something.

Now, years later, I still wonder what might've happened if things had been different.
If he'd looked back.
If I asked him to.

But life isn't a series of second chances. It's breath by breath, moment by moment and not everyone gets to finish the story they started.

I just hope, when I'm gone, he remembers me the way I remember him-completely, endlessly like I never had a choice.

"You have to be responsible for me. I'm just a burden." Cole's voice was quiet but firm coming from next to me. "Flo, that's not true. You're not a burden. We're just... worried about you. This isn't who you are." I could feel his eyes on me, searching for a connection, something to make me see reason, but all I felt was anger bubbling up inside me. "Yeah, well... I'm sorry for that," I said, my voice wavering. "Maybe you'd all be better off without me."
