They never knew that their instant connection was spurned by literal magic. They never would have known that a certain Original Hybrid is hunting down their bloodline. They never knew about an entirely different realm consisting of solely the supernatural and paranormal.

They lived as ordinary humans...
...so they died the same way.

4. Elena loved Stefan dearly, but she did not fall in love with him.

》It was an epiphany Elena had after she gave birth to Stefanie. She wakes up, only to find her husband holding a pink bundle. He was cooing at it, humming lullabies. Blue eyes look back at her, noticing the stare.

Then, Damon smiles.

Elena remembers when she first met Stefan. She recalls the times they spent together, and the relationship they shared as lovers. Looking back, she can finally be at ease on how she really felt about him. She will always love Stefan but it was time to face the truth. He was the guiding light in the dark, a wisp that led her to Damon. It was his support that helped her stand in a world of uncertainty. She was never in love with him, and that made him a dearer memory to her.

Because now, Elena and Damon will cherish him through their daughter.

5. If the Salvatores did not come to Mystic Falls, Elena would have fallen for either Elijah or Kol Mikaelson.

》There are countless possibilities in the universe. There was a chance the supernatural would have never crossed her path, and Bonnie would never have pursued her witch heritage. Then, she would have met Tom Avery and then eventually marry him in the end. There is a possibility it would have still found her, but Stefan and Damon were never in town.

Elijah found her first after she was delivered to him. Bonnie had to save her. John had to help. Elijah disappears for a time, but then Klaus arrives. Left with no choice for the sake of her loved ones, Elena succumbs to Klaus and agrees on an alliance.

Then, she meets the other Mikaelsons.

Elena would have found an ally in the man with a suit. Elijah is his name. He looks at her as if he had seen her many lifetimes ago. It was hard sometimes, a frustrating fact. He looked at her but he never sees her, at least not for long. His dark brown eyes were always calculative, yet they shine a hopeful gleam whenever she smiles at him for the simplest things.

He finds her diaries. He reads the words she never would have dared speak. She yells at him for it, cursing his existence to hell and back. He takes a few hits, barely fazed. He holds her and caresses her hair, a whisper in her room saying:

"I'm here."

Tomorrow comes and he knocks on her door again.

He tells her a world beyond what she could even realize. She asks him curiously of everything he ever encountered. He offers to show her that world, and promised many well-wishes for her future. There was a friendship in bloom yet it ignited something that seared in their veins.
