There were a number of items on the dinner table. Mr. and Mrs. Brown had done tremendous job in making the food. Everyone filled their plates, found a seat and dug in without a second thought. Except the Browns, that is. They opt to eat only after their guests had completed.
"Katie, you should eat with us." one of her relatives said.
She wasn't hungry but still agreed and started her dinner.
The dining room and the adjacent sitting room were filled with many small groups and talks. Katie found a spot in the dining room from where she could see Mark. He, along with his mother, were happily talking with the three kids. 'He has his way with kids huh...' She secretly smiled to herself at the thought. "How are your studies going Katie?" Her thoughts were interupted.
"Hello, Aunt Beth. They are going alright, I guess."
"Good. Good." she said as she sat beside her with her plate of food. "If only Steve was doing as well. He is all spoiled now..." letting out a sigh.
"It's Stephenie. And I am sure she is going alright as well." Katie replied, as she continued to eat. She didn't even bother to look at her while answering. 'I know she is.'
"It's Steve. He is my boy! All that's going on is just show. Don't fill my son's mind with all nonsense!
"She made her choice as an adult." She said looking straight into her eyes. "And no offense but you as a mother should try and understand her. Not push away."
"What!? So it's you who filled her head with all this!?! You-"
"What she did was because she is comfortable this way. What she did was because that's who she is. And I will support my sister all the way. Something that you as a mother should do. Now if you will excuse me."
Katie stood up, not wanting to hear anything anymore she went into the kitchen and kept her dishes. She wasn't done eating but her appetite was... gone. She then went out and was approached by yet another one of her relatives.
"Haven't had a chance to talk to you. How are you doing Katie?"
"I am doing just fine, Aunt Judith. How is your back now? That fall last month was quite serious, wasn't it?"
"Yes. I was on bed for almost two weeks. But Carl has been taking care of me and it's much better now. I saw you spoke to Beth but you just waked away. Is everything okay?"
"Oh that? Yes. Yes. Everything is fine. We were talking but then I was done eating so I excused myself." she said smiling all the way not wanting to give details.
"I see. Bethany can be difficult but given her son's state-"
"Daughter."
"Sorry?" she asked.
"Aunt Beth has a daughter. Not son."
"Ah. So you support all this, huh. So that's what happened." She did not get any reply, so she continued. "I suggest you stay out of it. It's for the adults of the family." Saying so she was about to walk away but Katie started talking.
"Sorry. It's about my sister and the adults here are, in my view, quite narrow minded. So no. I cannot stay away." She said with a I smile on her face and walked away.
Katie's Pov:
Dear God. These people still have so much problem with Steph... No wonder she ran away.
Katie was on a yard chair looking at the sky.
I hope she never has to come back to this. I am so glad my parents accept her. I don't know what I would do if they didn't.
