"I missed you so much," Sapnap's voice cracked, causing George's heart to break a little more than it already was.
A cough caused the two to pull apart, George feeling happier than he had in a very long time.
Sapnap laughed, using the back of his hand to wipe away the damp from his eyes.
George glanced over at Dream, who's arms gripped themselves uncomfortably tight.
There was a flash of something in his eyes that irked him, made that heavy feeling in his stomach return.
Dream smiled, though George could tell it was forced.
"Sapnap, can you come help me put the food away?" he asked, a slight sharpness to his tone George couldn't remember hearing before.
Sapnap rubbed the back of his neck.
"Uh yeah, sure," he said, glancing back at George before picking up the bag he had been carrying and following Dream into the kitchen.
George sat down, hugging himself in an attempt to keep some of the warmth Sapnap gave him.
Sapnap was back. Sapnap was here.
Sapnap.
George heard hushed voices from from the kitchen and grew curious, floating over to outside the door so Sapnap wouldn't see him.
He listened, tilting his head slightly.
"-can't do it? How long has he been here, struggling? You have to let go Dream."
"Nick you're just going to throw this all away when we're this close? I can't lose him again, and I know for sure you can't either. I saw the way you looked at him, how tightly you held him."
"Clay-"
"Nick. It's fine, its not like you can really do anything either. Besides, he's got to move on by himself, he's the only thing holding him here. Unfinished business or whatever."
George furrowed his eyebrows.
Nothing they said made sense to him.
He shrugged it off, seeing as he wasn't really supposed to be listening anyways.
George took a deep breath and stood up from where he had slid down the wall, shyly moving into the doorframe.
"Dream? Sapnap?" he said, catching their attention. Sapnap's eyes were red, his hands pressed into his sides like he was struggling to hold onto something unseen. Dream's shoulders were stiff, a sort of dangerous aura around him.
They both immediately softened upon sight/sound of George, Dream's demeanor changing completely.
"Hey George," Dream said, a smile working its way onto his face.
"Yo," Sapnap said, composing himself.
"What's going on?" his voice was quiet, his words echoing slightly. Sapnap looked down at his feet and Dream's smile faltered.
"Nothing, why do you ask?" Dream glanced over at Sapnap, who shoved his hands into his hoodie pocket.
"I just... No reason," George lied, running a hand through his hair and smiling a little.
His falsehood worked, seeing as Dream nodded and grabbed a packet of shredded cheese, putting it into the fridge.
It was late at night and Sapnap and Dream were asleep when George crept into Sapnap's room. He stood there for a moment, watching the rise and fall of his friend's chest.
