A/N: I got the idea for this fic like 2 months ago when I was about to fall asleep so this probably isn't going to be the greatest since I thought this up when I was delirious and this is technically my first official fic even though it's more of a one-shot. I just really love Kazuichi and I wanted to write something for him. Also, I just spent like 20 minutes looking through DR2 footage because I couldn't remember what chapter Kazuichi first calls Sonia by "Miss Sonia". I'm probably dumb for not remembering that this happens in literally the first chapter.

Warning: Explicit spoilers for most of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, lots of nods to Sonia x Gundham, depictions of death, mentions of starvation, swearing

Synopsis: Fear and unrequited love make for an unfortunate mix in Kazuichi, and a treasured friendship is nearly thrown away because of his poor ability to communicate.

Content/Tropes: Love triangle (kind of), hurt/comfort (but I'm really bad at it), friends to lovers

Word Count: 5.2k

Confusing was an understatement. Being placed on some island with strangers meant to be your friends, then to be spun 180 degrees and told to kill each other would give anyone whiplash. Maybe the word you were looking for was unfortunate? Yeah, unfortunate sounded better. Usami, or Monomi, as she was forcefully rebranded, was firm in her insistence to coexist with each other, but the others glanced around suspiciously, unsure of the other students around them. One by one, the students disbanded, returning to their rooms and dealing with this shared burden in their own way.

You leaned against your door, pushing it shut with a click, and sighed deeply. You didn't notice it until just now, but it felt as though you had been holding your breath ever since you arrived at this island. You flicked the light switch on, illuminating your room as you cautiously looked around before sitting on your bed. The room was decorated beautifully and filled with trinkets that were right up your ultimate talent's alley. You would have thought it cozy if you weren't laden by the fact that you might not survive this killing experience. You had settled into your bed, too far in denial to shed a tear about the perilous situation you and many other students found themselves in. There's no way this is real, right? It's not possible to be held hostage by a little stuffed animal... This had to have been a bad dream, or so you thought. You'd learn soon enough that this scenario was anything but fake.

As the days passed, unity began to grow throughout most of the group, thanks to the efforts of Byakuya. It seemed as though the only one who was opposed to making friends was Fuyuhiko. You found yourself spending a lot of time with Kazuichi, the pink-haired nervous wreck of a mechanic. He was reactive and entertaining (and as far as you could tell, too chicken to kill anyone). You were always there to pick him back up again when his charmless attempts to woo Sonia failed, and the polite princess always smiled gratefully at you, thankful that you were there to keep Kazuichi busy (and away from her) as she left to find Gundham.

The originally miserable turn of events had seemed a little more hopeful as the others started to form their own friend groups. While the situation was far from ideal, everyone seemed a little more at peace with the idea of life on the island and Byakuya had suggested holding a party to bring everyone closer together, the only one opposed to this being Fuyuhiko, of course.

You were stopped at the door by Byakuya, who insisted on checking for any sort of weaponry. After an awkward pat-down, he let you go and you continued on to the main room where most of the others were already gathered. You spotted Kazuichi and waved to him with a smile, walking over to him as he sipped on his drink and glanced over to the other side of the room. You joined his side and followed his eyes to Sonia happily chatting with Gundham.
