"damn summers been going to college parties?! proud grandpa moment happening over here!"
"ehh, not quite. i'm actually not in school anymore." you really hoped you wouldn't have to get into this, but to no avail. "my younger cousin goes to school with summer, and when my aunt and uncle go out of town she throws these big ass parties. i always get the invite."
luckily, the fact that you hang out with high school kids on the weekends wasn't the part that caught rick's attention. "you're not in school anymore? i thought to be a neuroscientist you'd have to be in school *burp* t-till you were 27 or some shit." he swiveled the chair around to face you.
"i always thought school was a waste of time, so i figured i would just try and get through it as quick as i could. i didn't know what i wanted to do until middle school, but luckily i had already skipped the 3rd and 4th grade. i'll spare the gory details, but i ended up graduating high school when i was 14." you explained, taking a seat on the floor in front of rick and pulling out a pack of cigarettes.
"you know there's a chair ri-"
"i'll live, do you care if i smoke in here?" you asked, looking up at rick and shaking the pack in your hand lightly.
"only if you pass it this way." rick replied with a slight smirk. you grinned a little and pulled out your second to last cig, putting it in your mouth and lighting it with your favorite lighter. you could sense rick's eyes on you, but decided not to acknowledge it. you took a puff, then another, then extended your arm up to rick with the cigarette between your fingers.
summer abruptly swung the garage door open. "granpa rick, have you seen- oh. there you are." the red head walked in and shut the door behind her. you watched as rick rolled his eyes, taking the cigarette and placing it between his lips.
"sorry summer, i was just talking to rick." you said, looking up at her with an apologetic smile.
summer shook her head. "it's alright, i figured you'd be in here. i just wanted to make sure you two weren't like fucking or something."
at that, rick choked on the cigarette smoke, going into a fit of coughs. "what the fuck, summer?!"
you and summer both began to laugh. "awe, what is it old man? never smoked a ciggy before?" you mocked, leaning back on your hands with a grin.
"i've smoked more cigarettes in one night than you have in your entire life, bitch." rick replied coldly, putting the the cigarette back up to his lips and taking another puff.
"my bad, i forgot not to get between a man and his ego." you smirked.
"burnnn." summer said with a grin, holding her fist out for you to bump it. you returned the fist bump, then took your cigarette back from rick.
"summer! come help me clean the kitchen!" you could all faintly hear beth call from outside the garage.
summer slumped her shoulders and groaned. "i'll be back in a few."
"summer!"
"i'm coming! geez." summer yelled back as she left the garage. a soft chuckle escaped your lips.
"do you drink?" rick asked as he pulled out his flask, giving the liquor inside a little swirl.
"occasionally." you replied before taking another drag, crossing your legs at the ankles.
"well you're talking to the smartest man in the universe, baby. *burp* s-sounds like an occasion to me." rick tossed you the flask and you caught it with your free hand.
"trade me?" you asked with a grin, holding the cigarette out to him. he gladly took it as you unscrewed the top of the flask, shuddering slightly when you took a whiff. you gave it a few good gulps, shivering a little as you screwed the cap back on. "geez what is that stuff? i already feel a buzz coming on."
"secret concoction. be careful, a few more big drinks like that and you won't even remember it in the morning." he said with a chuckle.
"what about you? don't act like i haven't been watching you sip this all night." you said before letting out an unexpected giggle. you're body feeling a bit warm now from the liquor.
"i've been drinking that shit for years. for me it's the equivalent of you drinking some kind of fruity shit." rick replied as you traded back your substances. you took the last drag of your cigarette before putting the butt out on the cold floor.
"don't you think your liver might be begging for help by now?" you asked, watching him take another swig.
"i said 'secret concoction' didn't i? i mixed a deteriorating algae with the alcohol that eats it all up before it gets to your liver, b-"
"but not before it gets in your blood. huh, you really are smart." you interrupted him with a smile. you began to stand up, stumbling backwards a little as you did so. rick grabbed your wrist to keep you from falling. "i'm good, i'm good." you chuckled. "i just wasn't expecting it to hit so fast."
"it'll ware off in about thirty minutes. we should go in anyways, i'm sure morty's about to have a tantrum because he's not getting enough attention."
-
a few hours went by of you hanging out with summer, morty, and rick. you watched some interdenominational cable and listened to stories about adventures the three had gone on. (rick was a much better story teller than summer) it was starting to get late though, so you decided it was about time to leave.
"i had a lot of fun tonight, but i think i'm gonna head home." you said with a smile, standing up from the couch.
rick stood up around the same time as you did, not even glancing in your direction. "*burp* bye, see you whenever." he said as he walked past the three of you, making his way back into the garage. you shrugged it off, turning to summer and giving her a warm hug.
"i'll text you, okay?" she said with a smile.
you nodded. "sounds good. bye morty, till next time." you said softly, sending him a wave. the boy waved back with rosy cheeks.
you made your way to the door, walking through it and shutting it gently behind you. as you walked down the driveway to your car, the garage door begin to open slowly.
"hey (y/n). not so fast." rick called as he ducked down under the garage door to get to you.
"yeah, rick?"
"i uh- *burp*" he looked nervous, it was cute. "i was wondering if maybe you'd *cough* want to get a drink with me tomorrow night?"
you were pleasantly surprised, letting a faint smile curl at your lips. "yeah. that sounds nice actually." you could feel your cheeks heat up a little. you watched as he fumbled through his lab coat pockets, pulling out a small piece of crumbled up paper.
"here." rick grabbed your hand and put the small paper ball in your palm, then gently closed your hand around it. "i'll see you tomorrow night."
"y-yeah. see ya." you replied, watching rick turn around and make his way back into the garage. you grinned wildly to yourself, turning around and heading to your car. once inside, you uncrumpled the note. you couldn't help but roll your eyes as you read it.
