Yamaguchi had decided he was going to take things into his own hands. He was going to plan his and Tsukishima's first proper date.
Sure the pair had spent hours together at home, hanging out after practice at the park near his house and even little study dates. However, Yamaguchi wanted to plan a full day of couples activities that would fulfill Tsukushima's dream date.
He had planned at least what he hoped was Tsukishima's dream date. The whole thing was a surprise. All his boyfriend knew was that they'd be going out on Saturday morning and that his schedule had to be free.
Tsukishima was both nervous and excited. He knew he'd enjoy any time he spent with his boyfriend regardless of where they go, but of course, having no idea, not even a hint of the plan, was nerve-wracking.
Tsukishima remembered the surprise he felt when out of the blue, Yamaguchi had asked him on a date. The freckled boy had made sure to specify that this would be an actual date, not just them spending their time like they always did. Tsukishima hadn't expected Yamaguchi to make the first move, but nonetheless, he had flusteredly agreed.
Soon enough, it was the day before their date, Yamaguchi had decided, he wasn't going to spend that night over at Tsukishima's house. He had told Tsukishima he simply wanted to make sure everything was prepared and would go as planned. In reality, Yamaguchi just didn't trust himself to keep the exciting plans a secret.
Both boys had spent the night tossing and turning in bed, filled with anticipation for the day to come. Tsukishima wasn't big on affection and romance, but for Yamaguchi, he'd do anything. He didn't know what the boy he loved so much had planned but what he had known was every moment of it would be cherished.
Yamaguchi had spent his night wondering if his boyfriend would enjoy what he had planned, whether things would work out as he hoped. Despite his anxious thoughts, he still had gone to sleep with a smile on his face knowing he'd spend the next day with his lover.
The next day Yamaguchi had woken up bright and early. He'd gotten ready with his bag full of stuff just in case anything, and when I say anything, I mean any little thing went wrong, he'd be set. He had an umbrella, snacks, power banks and, even a map, just to be sure everything would be okay.
Once he had been satisfied with everything he prepared, Yamaguchi made his way to Tsukishima's house, where he was greeted by Tsukishima's mother, " Ah Tadashi! Come in, come in! Kei will be down in a moment."
Yamaguchi had politely thanked his boyfriend's mother and waited in the living room. Tsukishima's mother left, yelling to her son that Yamaguchi was in the living room, which unsurprisingly didn't get much of a response.
Yamaguchi had been far from awkward. In fact, Tsukishima's house was practically like his second home. He had spent so much time there that it would've been weirder if he was uncomfortable. Once settled, Yamaguchi had decided he'd give his boyfriend a total of 10 minutes before going to knock on his door.
Tsukishima had heard his mother telling him that Yamaguchi had arrived and yet he had stood frozen in his room. He hadn't been nervous. Something had just stopped him from rushing to the door like he had intended to do when his boyfriend knocked on the door.
The thought of them going on a date wasn't weird or nerve-wracking at all. Actually, going on a date that wasn't hanging out near one another's homes was long overdue.
Maybe the label of 'an official date' was what intimidated him so much? All their 'dates' up until that point had been things they'd always done together, even as children. The newness of things to come had made him nervous, and who could blame him for it. He had wanted everything to be okay between them, and in his mind, anything new or different could change everything.
Now that didn't mean he hadn't been looking forward to the date. He just needed to get over the thoughts that tried to convince him that things would change for the worse, and for Yamaguchi, he'd try his best to do that.
He had been standing still, lost in his thoughts, for what seemed an eternity when a soft knock brought him back to reality. "Hey Tsuki, you in there? Can I come in?" Yamaguchi's voice accompanied the knocks moments later.
Tsukishima had been uncharacteristically nervous as he slowly opened the door, letting his boyfriend in. Yamaguchi had gone in for a quick hug and kiss on the cheek, which really didn't help Tsukishima clear his thoughts at all. Tsukishima had greeted the boy with a small "hey Tadashi..." and a noticeable troubled look on his face.
Yamaguchi, noticing his boyfriend's odd behavior had frowned slightly, his own thoughts had begun racing. "You know we don't have to go, we can stay here or go to the park, like usual..?" Yamaguchi couldn't help but let a bit of disappointment seep into his voice.
He had wanted to go on a proper date and do all the things on his itinerary, but of course, his boyfriend's happiness was most important to him at that moment.
Tsukishima had quickly shaken his head no, "of course not!" the boy had suddenly become very animated, unable to hold back once he saw the crestfallen expression on Yamaguchi's face.
"I want to go! I've been looking forward to our date all week, I promise!" Once he noticed the skeptical look on his boyfriend's face, he added, "I just... got a bit, nervous that's all."
"Are you sure? I really don't mind," Yamaguchi had asked again, still a bit hesitant.
In response, Tsukishima had pulled Yamaguchi into his embrace, "This feels new, and that made me worry. That's all it is. I was scared things would change... so my thoughts tried to convince me to stick to what's familiar." He had pulled away slightly to look at Yamaguchi, "I promise Yams I want to go, regardless of what we do or where we go, I know, I'll love every minute of it because I'll be with you.
As Tsukishima had finished his passionate clarification, which was most definitely way out of character, he realized the things he had said and let hues of pink cover his ears.
Finally, a small smile graced Yamaguchi's face, "okay then, let's go? We can go back to your house or mine whenever you want, though. I want today to be unforgettable and you being happy is the most significant thing in that scenario.
Tsukishima had smiled at his boyfriend's words and made sure to reassure him that wouldn't be necessary before grabbing his jacket.
Hand in hand, the pair had made their way to the first location Yamaguchi had carefully selected.
