Ding Dong.
I was startled awake by the sound of my doorbell. Sluggishly, I got out of my bed to answer my doorbell. Have you ever slept so peacefully and enjoyed your sleep so much that you just want to sleep for hours? This was the kind of sleep that left you more tired than when you slept but at the same time, it left you energized.
I yawned once I opened the door. There was a delivery man standing right behind it.
"I have a delivery for a Miss Robin Jacques?"
"Yes, that is me."
He stared me down as he took in my appearance, surprise and confusion overtaking the polite look that was on his face earlier. He shook his head to snapped out of it and handed me a clipboard. "You will have to sign here and here."
"Sure." I took his pen and inputted my signature on both pages.
"Thank you for your patronage." He said and I nodded in reply.
As I set down the box in a corner of my living room, I decided that it was time for me to take a shower. My mind went back to the scene where I was receiving my order from the delivery man. I stepped out of the shower and stared back at my reflection in the mirror. My hair which was dripping with water was glued to my forehead. My eyes carried dark circles that did not disappear after just a few hours of sleep. It never happened the way we saw it on TV. The way characters looked instantly better after a good night's rest. And if it did happen that way, it only meant that the world was unfair to me and I was going to be looking like a raccoon for the rest of my life.
I sighed letting my eyes land on my chest. Another evidence that showed that mother nature had not considered me that much in that department. My hairstyle, my choice of clothing and my feminine features were what led people into believing that I was man. At first it was conflicting. I had a lot of trouble with my self identity and found myself having an existential crisis at a very young age. But as time went on, I did not mind it anymore. I came out as non-binary and lived my life in peace. It didn't matter if I was a he or she or they. I was a human being and that was all that mattered.
There were days where I wanted to be called a woman. Like days at the mall where I have to go to the bathroom but get weird looks once I step into them. It has always been embarrassing.
I let those thoughts about being non binary slip away once I left the bathroom. I sat in front of my computer for the second time that day and began to edit various articles and interviews. Hours passed and I did not let the thought of anything else wiggle its way into my head. With laser sharp focus, I got halfway through the pile of work I had. Just as I was about to move onto another article, I received an email from one of my colleagues from work.
Here. The hottest thing in town is the change of weather. Apparently Larandale was the only country still experiencing heavy winter at the end of march but scientists are saying stuff like the possibility of neighbouring countries exhibiting this strange weathering phenomenon. However, there is a contradictory theory being told amongst the people. Do you remember the old fairytale about the four maidens in every country that summon and invite each season into the country? There are old people telling their children that perhaps something had happened to the spring maiden and perhaps we might be stuck inside an endless winter. What a load of crap. Anyways, the boss has had various writers and reporters visit the scientists for a scoop and also interview those who are in support with the theory of maidens and magic. The boss also wants you to edit and create the new article in such a way that causes a debate and stir among only what can be called the two factions now. Good luck and see you at work very soon. The email read.
After reading the email, my mind went into a frenzy. I instantly remembered the current situation at hand. It was not as though people did not know about the maidens. since it their existence was never proven, it was dismissed as a mere fairytale told as bedtime stories by parents to their children.
It did surprise me that the possibility of someone bringing up something about the spring maiden existed. My brain could not think of anything else that could help me discover her location or anywhere else where she may have gone to.
"UGHH." A groan escaped my lips as my hands ran through my hair furiously. I felt as if I was thrown into a fictitious work of art called Finding Ophelia. Finding balance between work and the search for the dark skinned spring maiden was going to prove itself to be tedious.
"And not to mention the stupid article that I have to start prepping for. Why do I have to be the one to do it?" I said out loud. I let my head slump onto the table as silent sobs escaped my lips. "Where are you Ophelia?"
Then, at that moment, just like a flash of lightning, the dream I had came back to me. I remembered everything, From watching myself watch Ophelia become the spring maiden to seeing that strange man and the scenery changing to that of Venice. I then had a sudden urge to travel back to the king's palace. I could not say that there was a particular thing that made me want to go back there. It was just a feeling in my bone. I took out a small travelling bag and packed some of my clothes after calling my secretary.
"Hello sir- I mean ma'am."
"Hello Pepper. I have told you that I do not mind you calling me either of the two."
"I know, ma'am. It is just going to take some time getting used to it."
"It is okay, I get it."
"It sounds like you are in a hurry. What do you need my help with?"
"I need you to help me find out if there are any available planes that are heading to the capital today or tomorrow."
"Okay..." I heard the sound of her clacking keyboard while she was quiet, indicating that she was indeed making enquires. "You are in luck sir, the next flight is by 7:20 PM."
"Great. Please book the flight for me."
"Okay. I will email the e-ticket to you and all you need to do is let them scan the QR code at the airport."
"Thank you so much Pepper, you are a darling."
"You are welcome sir- I mean ma'am."
"It is okay. Have a good night." I said then cut the call.
I checked my watch and it showed, 5:16 PM. I ordered an Uber to take me to the airport immediately after that. My heart was elated because it no longer felt as if I had hit a 10 feet high brick wall. I was one step closer to finding Ophelia now. Even if it was small and uncertain. I was going to take all my chances to find my best friend.
