Shinso loosened his tie and walked aimlessly down yet another alleyway. The sun had been hot on the back of his neck but the shadows offered cool protection. After the casino incident, he lost track of Kaminari, so he was alone to his thoughts.

He had no idea where (Y/N) was and the hours were up. What was he searching for anymore? She had been his reason for everything for so long. But he went too far. Now, he had to face the music.

And the music came in the form of a red blade darting across his neck, forcing him to stop his contemplative stroll. His heart sank, worried the cult finally came to catch him off guard, but he was surprised to see a very stern looking Hawks.

The number two hero was covered in scrapes and bleeding slightly from his scalp and eyebrow. Shinso didn't know Hawks very well on a personal level, but he never witnessed anything but a cocky grin. This glower almost matched his own.

"Been lookin' for ya," his casual tone didn't match the look on his face, "Care to chat? And by chat I mean you sit quietly and listen, of course."

Doesn't look like I have much of a choice... Shinso thought.

It was like Hawks read his mind, "Good. Now, what do you think we should do with you? My clever vigilante."

Shinso's eyes widened. Guess everyone knew? He wondered if (Y/N) told him... The thought alone made him sick, but he knew he deserved it.

"Not that I really have proof yet, but your face says it all. Anyone else might turn you in. But that would break (Y/N)'s heart more than you already will - or have?" he said, "And I kinda wanna be on her sweet side. Besides, your quirk is hella valuable, kid. We could really use someone like you."

"Then, wh-"

"Ah!" Hawks raised a warning finger, "Not yet. I get it - how do I know all this? What do I want? Well, I'm a nosy bastard for one. At first, I thought the cultists turning up at the station, or dead, were (Y/N)'s doing. I've been keeping a close eye, but it wasn't her after all.

Then, when (Y/N) told me about her missing phone the cultists gave her, I thought, it had to be a classmate who took it. Someone who visits her room often. A boyfriend, perhaps? An overprotective boyfriend at that."

Hawks held up the tiny black rectangle and dangled it like a bell, "I was right."

When did he..? Shinso pressed his lips together. Hawks was a pro. Shinso had been way in over his head from the start.

And (Y/N) told him about it?

(Y/N) never mentioned the phone to Shinso. He just caught her with it and took it out of fear. It was how he and Yuma made contact.

"But anyway, I'm sure you could talk your way out of all this. Hell, you could probably report me for snooping without a warrant. However, I'm here to make an offer."

"Why?" Shinso asked, then raised his hands, "I won't... brainwash you."

"You should, though. You could easily get away. But you don't want to. Right?"

Shinso let a long breath out of his nose, and nodded.

"I think you're a good guy," Hawks shrugged, "Traumatized and in need of some serious therapy, maybe a firm hand... but isn't everyone? I have something I think you could help me with - after agreeing to do some grueling training and selling your soul to the HPSC."

He dropped his feather blade, "You'll be gone a while. Not at UA or with your family. I recommend writing some letters. I can only offer you this here and now, and I suggest you take it. The alternative is... less fun."
