Wei Ying's legs morphed into a long tail, and with it, he swam into the black as coal abyss and didn't dare look back.
As a merman, he couldn't... totally see in the dark, but he was a natural creature of the sea, the darkness was not an issue, nor were the creatures that lurked.
Wei Ying swam deeper and deeper, his merman blood adapting to whatever temperature he was surrounded by so when he reached a point where the creatures around him knew nothing of warmth... his power came in handy in scaring them away.
Wei Ying whimpered, swimming until he couldn't see the surface or the boat and soulmate he left behind, before clinging to the ocean floor and curling up into a ball besides coral and small fishes and crying his eyes out.
He screamed, bubbles escaping his mouth as he took deep breaths just to scream again, sobbing in agony.
He had been betrayed by the very people he thought loved him.
He had been used, treated as a common animal, farmed, everything he was scared of.
He became 'it', a thing to be sold.
He hoped it was worth it for them... because he was never returning to the surface again. Ever.
He would never return to land. It wasn't a place for him anyway. His heart would turn to ice never to thaw and he would spend eternity at sea, alone, but safe.
He would never be used again.

When daytime rolled around, Wei Ying was no longer enveloped by darkness, he could see all the colours of the corals, the fishes, the dusty yellow sand.
But he didn't feel better.
Wei Ying sniffed, hugging his crimson tail, some was still grey... okay a lot was still grey, but he was slowly regaining colour.
He sighed softly, hiccuping and starting to sob again, looking at his tail...
So many scales were gone...
He sobbed into his arms, shaking, lost, what do I do now?
He didn't know, he honestly didn't know.
But he knew he would start by getting as far a fucking way from land as possible.
Taking a deep breath, Wei Ying straightened and began to swim as fast as he possibly could, causing waves at his speed, leaving bubbles behind him for miles, he swam and swam until nobody would ever find him.
