The sound of running paws echoed through the forest. They continued out into the open to the lake, then they stopped. A blue cat stared at the lake.
He took in a big breath and sighed. "Ah... the smell of the lake. This will always be my second home." he smiled as he watched the sun glisten on top of the water.
"Tide!" a voice called from the distance.
The cat shifted his gaze at the sound of his name. He looked around trying to see where it was coming from. An octopus could be seen sitting at the water's edge, waving one of its tentacles. Tide dashed over. "'ey Legs!" he said, grabbing one of the octopus' arms.
"Even though you're older, you still call me that!" the octopus said.
"Of course! We've been friends forever." Tide responded. "And how did you get here? You said you were going back to the ocean."
"Well, I found my way back." he responded. "Anyway, how have you been? Also, what brings you to the lake?"
"Sam, I've been coming to this lake forever. The lake is like my home away from home, remember? Anyway, it's just been busy since you left. I moved into a new cave and I've been living there for a couple of months. My sister is busy as usual. I've been helping her out, she is moving out of our parents' cave."
"It sounds like you've got a lot on your mind and a lot happening." Sam said, sounding quite surprised.
"Yes, but it's alright. Anyway, how have you been?" Tide replied.
"Pretty good. I have just been visiting family and then I decided to return here. This is my home. Also, I have to mention, outside of this area, there are tons of other lakes, as well but I can't get to them. You should check them out. They're quite beautiful, I hear." he said.
"Alright, I'll check them out. I don't mind seeing new places." Tide said. A thought crossed his mind and he smirked, "Legs, do you remember when you were helping me with my water abilities?"
Sam looked at him, "Yes, I remember well. You were very curious. Never scared to try different things and you were also quite mischievous." he said, holding his arm out.
"Oh... you mean like this?!" Tide shot water from his paw, splashing Sam in the face.
"You!" Sam scooped up water and splashed him back.
Tide ducked, dodging the water and shot it back at him.
Sam splashed a much larger amount at Tide, soaking him from head to tail. He laughed and looked at him. Tide stood for a moment, dripping. His expression changed, he raised an eyebrow and tilted his head to look at Sam. He laughed and shook the water from his fur. "You got me."
"You can't beat the water master." Sam joked.
Tide collected the water from his paws and threw it. It hit Sam in the face.
"Now, bow down to the real water master." Tide said, laughing.
"You wish!" Sam joked. They laughed harder.
Tide looked at the sky and realized that it was starting to turn orange. "I must be heading back." he said, realizing that it was getting late. Time seemed to be flying by.
"Okay, it was nice to see you, old friend." Sam said, grabbing Tide's paw.
"It was nice to meet up with you again. Don't worry, I will return to the lake. As I said, the lake will always be my second home, my friend." Tide said.
"Alright then. Take care."
"I'll see you sometime, Sam." Tide said, before disappearing into the forest.
He walked into the clearing, taking in the scent of the trees and fallen leaves. He could see the lake just through the trees. Suddenly, a thought came to his mind:

'I do love this area, it's my home but I always wondered what lies beyond.'
