Odd Man Out: Chapter 2 - It's Back

(Bold and italics is her reading thoughts)

High school was one day away and I had to convince Hopper all summer that I would be safe in school.

"I will be with the party all day, plus I have superpowers so I could literally kill anyone who threatens me ya know?" I sarcastically implied.

"I don't trust those kids very much. One person says anything and your coming straight home. Understand."

That conversation was 3 months ago at the beginning of summer when the rules were very strict. I had to be home before dark and couldn't go to busy public places.

A few weeks before Hopper died, he and I worked on controlling my powers and how to strengthen them. That made me discover I could read minds but when I focus too long and hear too many at once I get a banging headache.

Eleven discovered she has new powers too but she didn't care to learn much about them.

"Rouge, this is Bard do you copy. Over" Dustin spoke over the walkie-talkie sitting on my bedside table right beside the polaroid of El, Max and I.

"What Dustin it's past the curfew." I dragged out the last few words

"This is very important. Mikes in 10 minutes.Over and out." Dustin tiredly said as I walked out of the front door of my motel

I used to sneak out of my window because Max and I met up all the time to skateboard around at night.

I grabbed my bike and raced away to Mikes's house. I walked up to the window knocked 4 times and slid right through.

"Alright, big problem. Somethings back, we don't know what it is or what it's doing. But we just know it's here." Miked paced as he stated the problem.

"How do you know it's back," I questioned

"I felt it." Will quietly piped up from the corner of the room.

"We know it's from the upside-down and no, we have no clue what it is," Lucas explained.

"Great, just great. We have another fricking monster to deal with and can't just have a normal school year with no monsters." Max growled. I mean she's not wrong.

We were there for about 30 minutes then had to leave since school started tomorrow. I was about to climb out the window when a sweaty hand grabbed my wrist. I immediately pulled away.

"I-Its ok. It's just Mike." Mike squeaked. "I-uh just wanted to know if you've heard from El because she isn't answering her walkie anymore." He hesitated while running his hands through his hair.

"Uh, no I haven't heard from her sorry." I lied. El and I had talked this morning but I didn't want to tell him that.

That morning

"Sev, I'm going to tell you something and you can't tell anyone especially Mike. I'm going to tell him later. Promise" Eleven insisted.

"Promise," I replied.

"I met a boy, his name is Stanley. They have their own party here and invited me to join them. Then Stanley asked me to be his girlfriend and I said yes. I'm breaking up with Mike tomorrow morning." Eleven rambled.

My heart dropped out of my chest. Eleven had been gone for a few weeks and already moved on and Mike was still so in love with her. But I couldn't tell him, I can't do that to El.

"How do you think he's going to take it?" I asked her.

"Hopefully fine but, I'm not sure. I have to go now but I love you and miss you. Over and out." The static ran through my head.

Poor Mike, he doesn't deserve to be dumped like this. At least Eleven is happy with Stanley.

Present Time.

It was the morning of my first day of high school. I was so nervous yet so excited. We were all meeting in the high school AV room but my guess is only a few people will show up. Max and Lucas I doubt will, but I'll be there.

I grabbed a banana and brushed my teeth quickly. I brushed my hair and applied light makeup to my face. I ran back to my room to get dressed, I grabbed a white shorts sleeve shirt and my jean vest and threw them on. I ran over to the dresser and the first pair of black mom jeans I found and put them on.

After getting dressed I rushed to the door as it was 7:45 and school started at 8:00. I quickly slipped on my converse and ran out the door. I hopped on my bike and raced out to school.

I finally got to school and saw the party standing by the door. Troy Walsh standing by them. Then his backpack flew back while pulling Troy along with it.

"Opps." I snorted while walking into the school.

My guess is Eleven didn't tell Mike yet since he looked rather happy. Maybe that's how he deals with his sadness. Who knows.

I made my way to my locker and my eyes immediately got caught by some new kid. He had brown flowy hair, good bone structure, a blue and white shirt and some levis on. Man, I hope he's in my class.

Bling, Bling!

The first bell rang and the rush of the morning was over.

I made my way over to English with Lucas, Mike and... no new kid. he's for sure in Max's class.

The day slowly went by and finally, the last bell rang.

"I can't go to AV today Max and I got plans," Lucas yelled as he met up with Max.

Mike and I walked in uncomfortable silence to the AV room. To our surprise, no one was there.

We took in all the nicer and better equipment they had here.

"Mike-uh hello." Eleven spoke over the walkie-talkie.

"Eleven, oh my god Eleven I miss you so much." Mike gushed over the walkie.

"Yeah um, about that. I think we should break up. Long-distance isn't really working for me. I have a new life and new friends, I've moved on. I think you should too." Then all we heard was static.

Mike broke down with tears pouring out of his eyes. His heart had just been ripped in half. I quickly got up and ran over to him. I placed my arms tightly around his neck on my tippy toes.

He dug his face into my shoulder and wrapped his arms around my waist. The poor boy was destroyed.

We pulled away from the hug and I got up to get him some tissues. The shoulder of my shirt was drenched with Mikes's tears.

"D-did you know she was going to do it."Mike sniffled.

"Yeah, I'm so sorry. she told me not to tell you and I couldn't go behind her back," I explained looking at my hands.

How did I fuck this up?

"I understand. Thanks for being here, you know." Mike wept.

After sitting for a bit consoling Mike we decided to go home and go our separate ways.

Walking out of the front door I saw the boy again.

Mike had left to go home and most likely cry so I walked up to the new kid.

"Hey, I'm seven." I chirped.

"H-Hi I'm B-Bill."
