Friday scrunched her nose as she chuckled. "Speaking of," shifting in her seat, she turned to face him. "What brings you here?"
The mood inside the car changed instantaneously, the air growing tense. Silas didn't speak, his grip on the steering wheel tightening.
"Sorry, you don't need to tell me." She rushed out, a frown pulling at her brows.
"No, no you're okay." With a sigh, he began to speak. "Do you want the full story or just the basics?"
Friday didn't need to think long before the words slipped from her mouth. "The full story. From the beginning."
Silas nodded stiffly, obvious tension creeping down his spine, but he released it with a sigh. "My dad was American. He was a great man, had always given up everything for my mother and I. When he found out she was pregnant with me he left everything behind to live with my mother back in London. It was a big thing for him, his whole family was here, his parents, his brothers, and he had never once been separated from them for too long. My mother was there for him when he was missing home, they were inseparable and so helplessly in love." A chuckle passed through his lips as his memories fluttered through his brain. "Reena used to come over when we were kids and we used to scream and cover our eyes when they shared a kiss in front of us."
Friday smiled, watching as his face flitted between emotions. He wore his emotions so clearly on his face and it intrigued Friday. She enjoyed the way he could show his vulnerability. Friday halted her thoughts when his eyes turned sad.
"When I was around sixteen something in my mother shifted and my parents started fighting. It was weird to hear them arguing and to see my father unable to fix anything. When I turned eighteen they finally decided to get a divorce and my dad and I moved back to America."
Friday furrowed her brows as she watched Silas' face morph from sadness to hurt to anger to sorrow.
"Do you know what caused the shift in your mother?"
Silas nodded sadly. "She was suffering. She had many undiagnosed mental illnesses that we had no idea about. When my dad found out he was distraught; I think he blamed himself for giving up on her so quickly, for not having realised it sooner. He tortured himself about it, both physically and mentally, for about four years before it eventually took its toll and he passed away during my final year of college. I fell into a bit of a slump for about a year after he died before I decided to start my training to become a therapist."
Silas sent her a small, sad smile. She cast her eyes towards the ring on his finger, the one he said his dad gave to him before he died. It almost broke her knowing the younger version of himself had to suffer through this. "And your mother? Where is she now?" Her voice came out soft, as if afraid she would break if she spoke too loud.
"She's uh," Silas clenched his jaw, forcing a strained smile to his lips. "In a clinic back in London." He said. "Refuses to see me."
Friday let her head drop as her hands clenched together in her lap. "I'm so sorry." She said tenderly, because what else could she say?
"It's okay, love." He said as he pulled the car into the school. He quickly parked the car before reaching over and grabbing her hand in his. "I'm okay now, so I don't want you to worry about me, alright?" Friday frowned, unsure if she could keep that promise, but she nodded anyway, looking up at him.
"Thank you for driving me." She said, opening the door.
Just as she was about to step out Silas asked "What time do you finish? I'll come pick you up."
Friday felt her heart grow warm with excitement at his words. "My last class finishes at three."
"Okay, it'll either be me or Reena, just in case I run over on an appointment. Is that okay?" Friday nodded, muttering a small goodbye before slipping out of the car and running off into school.
