chapter six | aftermath

"same sis," it was music to my ears to listen thomas say.

'sis'.

"now i know why we had a connection," i said, with a face of relief, that i solved the mystery.

"yeah, i'm happy," he said with a smile, ear-to-ear.
"as much as i want to stay here and talk with my sis, i need to go run in the hole," thomas said, disappointed.

"yeah, go ahead bro," i said smiling to him.

"bye," we both said in unison. i was overjoyed.

i was bored. i had the day off for being a medjack. yeah, if there was no patients, i would do nothing but talk to clint and jeff, but now i'm just laying down on my hammock looking at the wooden panels on the ceiling.

'i need to do something' i thought.

it was irritating me, not doing anything. i tried to go to sleep, didn't work, i tried to talk to people, most of them were asleep because it was their day off. the runners have already left.

'wait' i thought.

'the runners! why don't i go in the hole' i thought. 'no! i'm not a runner i cant do that, but when have i ever stuck to the rules?'

now with a smile on my face, i was debating whether or not i should go. it was almost like the devil and angel on my left and right shoulder. the angel saying that i should stay, i'm a medjack not a runner and the devil was saying about how ive never stayed to the rules anyways and that ive found the hole, i could find other things to get us outta here.

'i'm a rulebreaker anyway' i thought. i quickly stood up and walked out of the hut.

i walked towards the hole in the forest. not gonna lie, my palms were a little bit sweaty. i never went inside the hole, only examined it. so, it was all new to me. i can't back down now, i was way too close. finally i got to the entrance. taking a deep breath, i put my first foot inside the entrance.

'huh, not so bad' i thought and put my other foot inside.

'okay were getting somewhere' i was thinking while putting my whole body inside the hole. i was relieved nothing bad happened, but this is just the beginning. i couldn't hear any of the runners. i didn't want to be caught, so that's a good thing. i just hope none of them were being eaten by the grievers. i mean we would probably hear the screams from the glader and the screech from the griever, eating someone in pleasure.

i also hope i don't get eaten too, i mean i just found out i have a brother, so that would be a massive bummer.

:okay stop thinking about the negatives, wait i'm literally in a massive, metal hole surrounded by absolutely nothing, how can i think of any positives'

i was thinking the same thing over and over again. i cut off any negative thoughts and went forwards. i wasn't gonna stop until i find something. anything. that was until i heard something in the distance.

'what is that?' i thought while looking around more rapidly. suddenly, the noise was coming closer and closer to me. newt reminded me that the runners come back when it starts to get dark, the same time everyday. i looked up at the sky and saw that it was starting to get dark.

'crap' i thought, realising that the noise i heard was the runners coming back from their run.

i was out of thought, i didn't know what to do at this point. my legs felt like jelly. i raised my hands to my scalp, trying to figure out a solution to this mess. 'wait, i didn't actually go that far, just remember the route i went' i thought long and hard about the steps i took to get where i was.
