Milo Brooks worked at the largest publishing company in Stone Valley. He was handsome describing himself to be at least a seven out of ten. He was young, he had a high-paying job, and he was in love with his boss. Avery Rhoades was intelligent, hardworking, and beautiful. Her piercing dark eyes felt like they cut through him every time she looked at him. It wasn't surprising though; she was an alpha. In every sense of the world. When she walked into the room everyone stepped out of her way and they always paid attention to what she had to say. She stood tall among everyone else, and Milo was simply happy to be in her shadow. If only that meant that he got to stand near her.
But that wasn't surprising either, that sort of behavior. Just being content with scraps of affection or attention that he got. Aside from being a chronic people pleaser. (According to his therapist). Milo was an omega in every sense of the word. He was soft-spoken and friendly. People always felt like they could talk to him about their problems. They also felt like they could always throw extra work on him as well. Milo would've been worked to death at the company had it not been for Avery insisting that he worked with her and only her. When they first started working together, Milo was happy to have an excuse for everything he didn't want to do. But as time went on. He fell for her; he fell for her hard.
It was pathetic how many times he had to hastily rip out pages from his legal pads from how many hearts he had drawn around their names. He was a grown man acting like he was in middle school with a crush. But he couldn't help it, Milo was sure anyone would fall for Avery once they got to know her. This is probably why he felt miserable every time Avery would have a private meeting with any clients. He would sit outside of Avery's office sure that she was falling in love with the client in there. He knew it was crazy. Logically he knew that. But his heart didn't care about logic. All he wanted was for at least one night. Just one. For Avery to look at him the way he looked at her.
But that would never happen and here he was outside of her office again. At the end of the year trying to listen through the door to what was being said. Francis Moore was a regular client of the company, and he loved to work with Avery on anything he needed to be published. He also loved to flirt relentlessly with her despite being a beta male. It was unusual tastes for sure, seeing as alpha females typically ended up with either beta females or omega females. That fact always rubbed a little more salt in the wound for Milo. Aside from the show Sunset Lovers, there were no other female alphas and male omegas couples presented in the public. You'd think there would be more considering how popular Monty and Harry were as a couple but...
Milo looked up from his phone as the door opened. "I think you need to leave Francis. Go spend time with your family." Avery's cool even voice spoke up. Quickly stuffing his phone into his pocket, Milo watched as Francis trudged out looking annoyed. He shot a dirty look at Milo who had been staring and scoffed under his breath. Milo tilted his head confused and looked to Avery. "Milo see that Mr. Moore finds the door out," Avery remarked before heading back into her office and closing the door. Milo stood up and Francis gave him a dirty look, "I can find my way out on my own thank you very much!" He snapped before storming out of the waiting room.
The door slammed shut and Milo checked the time seeing that it was close to the end of the day anyway. Walking over he locked the door and headed over to Avery's office door. "Miss Rhoades, can I come in?" He asked knocking, "Yeah." He heard Avery's muffled voice call, he opened the door and saw Avery sitting behind her desk dressed in a dark blue power suit as she always was. Milo was sure she owned twelve of those in the same color. He didn't mind though. It looked great on her.
Avery and Milo smiled politely at each other and Avery at her computer screen with a sigh. "Something the matter?" Milo asked stepping further into the office. "Francis is an asshole," Avery spoke frankly causing Milo to laugh. Avery always got like this at the end of the day. Milo was the only one who ever got to see this side to her. "Did he ask you out on a date again?" Milo asked with a lopsided smile, he gave her a pitying look. "Despite being married and at least twenty years older than me? Yes." Avery confirmed, Milo sighed and sat in the chair in front of the desk. "You want me to beat him up?" Milo joked causing Avery to look up from her notebook and then laugh. "I appreciate it Milo, but I don't want Francis to die," Avery replied, Milo chuckled to himself, and the conversation lulled to a stop for a moment. Milo checked the time on his phone. It was just minutes away from closing now. He'd go home for a few days until the New Year.
