Chapter 28: He's Gone

Olivia is distraught and beside herself with fear, not wanting to accept her boyfriend's fate.

"GALLY!" she yells, tears streaming down her face, her voice scratchy from how much she had been crying.

"It's ok, darling" Gally says, trying to calm the poor girl down. She has been through so much, he didn't want her to have to go through anything more.

"NO! LET HIM GO! LET HIM GO! I WON'T LET YOU TAKE HIM!" she screams, trying anything she can to keep Gally with her.

"Liv. It's ok. I promise" he says, knowing he has to stay strong for her.

"It won't be. It won't be ok" She talks in between sobs, shaking her head, not listening to her boyfriend trying to tell her everything will be alright. How could it? He was going to die. She wasn't dumb. Her, like everyone else, knew the horrors of the place they were going to. No one could escape. They would all die first.

"I'll be in and out so quickly, you won't even notice I'm gone" Neither of the pair believed these words, no matter how much they may want to.

"I will notice! Gally, I won't let them take you from me!" Olivia clings onto him for dear life, trying to stop the guards from peeling her off of him.

"What's going on here?" Ava Paige's voice stops everyone in their tracks.

"YOU MONSTER! I'LL KILL YOU! I WON'T LET YOU PUT HIM IN YOUR STUPID MAZE! HE STAYS HERE WITH ME!" Olivia shouts, blinded by the pure rage she has for this woman. All she could see was red.

"Liv-"

"TAKE ME INSTEAD! TAKE ME! JUST PROMISE YOU WON'T PUT GALLY IN THE MAZE! PROMISE!" Olivia interrupts Gally. She was so desperate to save him that she was prepared to sacrifice her own life instead.

"You know I can't promise that" Ava says calmly. "Finding the Cure is just too important"

"Angel, it's ok. Let me go. I'll escape quickly, you'll see. Everything will be back to how it was before the Flare Virus soon, and we'll be back to normal too. Gally and Olivia. Together forever, remember?" The boy's words seemed to talk some sense into the girl, who couldn't even think straight at the moment, but who could blame her? Her whole life was being ripped apart.

"But you won't remember me" Olivia mumbles.

"You're right" Gally sighs. "But even without my memories, I'll find you and I'll love you all over again. Something as stupid as a memory wipe couldn't come between us. I won't let it. I love you too much"

"Please just let us have ten minutes to say goodbye properly" Olivia begs the woman.

"Five" Ava replies, thinking to herself how tight the schedule is.

Knowing arguing would just make her have no time with Gally, Olivia agrees. The guards and Ava leave to give them a bit of privacy.

"I love you" Olivia mutters, hugging Gally tightly. "They'll pay for taking you" The boy looks at her, and the dark look in her eye shows that she means it.

"Don't do anything that can upset them, baby. Please. Promise me you won't"

"I can't. You know I can't!"

"Darling, you must"

"Fi- fine" she says after a few moments of consideration.

"That's my girl" Gally gently kisses the top of Olivia's head and rubs her arm.

"If they don't send me up into the Maze after you-"

"What?! No! You need to stay here. You hear me? You're not supposed to go in the Maze. Ava said so herself" Gally held onto the girl's shoulders as he spoke, wanting her to understand the importance of listening to him.

"And watch you die?!" Olivia scoffs. "No chance"

"I need you to wait for me for when I escape. What if something happens to you in the Maze, hm? What if you get Stung, and I have to kill you? Is that what you want? Do you want me to kill you?" Gally raises an eyebrow.

"Of course I don't!"

"Didn't think so. You must stay here. You understand me?"

"Well, what if you get Stung, and I have to watch you die?!"

"I won't get Stung"

"Oh, so you won't, but I will? Anyway, you might"

"I won't!"

"You don't know that"

"I. Won't"

"Times up" Ava Paige breaks up their conversation.

"NO!" Olivia shouts. She can't have her last talk with Gally being about them arguing. She couldn't have her last memory of them together as that. She wouldn't allow it.

Gally starts getting dragged away by guards.

"I'M SORRY!" Olivia yells, as the love of her life gets taken further and further away from her.

"ITS OK! I PROMISE I'LL FIND YOU! I'LL NEVER FORGET ABOUT YOU, PRINCESS!" Gally replies.

"I LOVE YOU!"

"I L-" Gally's last words are drowned out by a door slamming shut, with Olivia on one side, and Gally on the other.

The girl broke down crying, knowing she would never see him again.

"Gally..." she mumbles, her whole heart aching. Had he really gone? Did she really just lose him to monsters that would drag out his death, making it painful and slow? A death that nobody should have to suffer? With the exception of everybody who was doing this to them, of course.

She couldn't accept the fact that she would never feel his warm embrace again, that he would just become a distant memory, nothing more than what is known as a childhood sweetheart.

She was young, yet she knew she wanted to spend the rest of her life with this boy. She wanted to grow old with him, start a family, tell their children about the Flare Virus, and laugh and make jokes about it.

But that will never happen.

He's gone.
