The sun wasn't fully out, but the detective Off Jumpol Adulkitiporn was already driving to the crime scene, though he was still half asleep. The traffic wasn't bad, so his travel through Bangkok was going smooth. Every sane human being was in this early hour in the bed. He yawns a few times before pulling his car to the parking lot. As soon as he stepped out of his precious silver Hyundai Tucson, he spotted a patrolman waiting for him in front of the giant iron gate. Benjakitti Park, one of the most visited public parks in this city. It's not that large, but it still gives you a nice time walking it through. Off moved to the entrance, nodding at the young policeman in greeting. He didn't utter a word as he follows the newbie inside the complex green. He walks strictly on paved roads, not wanting to dirty his new limited edition Adidas sneakers which perfectly fit the black ripped jeans he was wearing. His branded dark blue denim jacket with a white shirt under it, flutters in the light morning breeze. He always wears his shirt with three buttons open, shoving his well-defined chest. Being a police officer didn't stop his love for fashion. He knew how to save money, so he could afford to add rare pieces of clothing into his large wardrobe. The paycheck of a civil servant wasn't the biggest, but he didn't complain. It was he who choose this path after all.
The crime scene was sealed with yellow tape to prevent the intrusion of unauthorized personnel. Off yawned one more time before going under the plastic and waving his hand at his colleges, letting them know he arrived. A head forensic technician Singto Prachaya Ruangroy was running around taking multiple photos, letting his underlings collect pieces of evidence. The pathologist and his best friend Tay Tawan Vihokratana was patiently waiting for the forensics to finish. The corpse lay in the boat in the same position as they had found it. He made his way closer.
"Good morning, Off." One of his subordinates and fellow detective Mew Suppasit Jongcheveevat greeted him as he walked by his side to the small pier.
"Morning, what do we have here?" Off asked, trying to suppress another yawn. Mew chuckled, showing his handsome face. Off never understands why this attractive man chooses to be a policeman instead of a model. He had a look, body and fashion sense for it.
"Woman in her late twenties, identity still unknown. Two park workers spotted the untied boat in the middle of the lake during their round. When they approached it, they got shocked for life. Doctor Vihokratana had not yet begun examining the body. We are waiting for forensic to finish their work." Mew summarized. Off nodded in understanding.
"Telling the truth, I was shocked too. I never saw anything like this before." Mew sigh, shaking off the unpleasant memory. Jumpol's eyebrow raised. They scrape through the pair of technicians in blue jackets with yellow NFSL* on the back, stopping next to the tall black-haired man dressed in protective clothing.
"Hi, pengyou." The pathologist smiled at his friend.
"Hi, Tay."
"Before you ask. I didn't get to start. Singto is still taking photos. It's difficult. You know, boat on the water." Tay pointed at the object before him.
"Oh? I wouldn't have told." Off snickered, glancing towards the crime scene. He didn't realize he stopped moving for a second before Singto spoke up.
"All your's Tay. Hello Off," The detective got greeted again.
"Hello." He answered, blinking few times, to recover from the initial shock. It wasn't the first time he saw a dead body. But the sight before him made his stomach twist. It's not that the scene was bloody. What sends shivers down his spine was the setting the body was arranged in. The young-looking woman laid in the centre of the wooden rowboat. Her sunny yellow dress, partly covered by the black cloak, shone through the blanket of red dahlias, which surrounded her. Her face was pale yet strangely beautiful. Her manicured hands held an old looking scroll. The whole setting looked like an arrangement prepared for the artist to paint.
Off watched Tay climbing down on the boat, carefully not to step on the beautiful flowers. He bent over the body, observing the whole figure at once. He crouched down, making the floating wood shake. He cursed under his breath as he tried to get back his lost balance. Singto standing beside him took few more photos. The pathologist reached for the piece of paper with his latex gloves, pulling it out of the tight grip and handing it ably to one of Singto's assistants. The scroll got unroll and put in the plastic bag. Mew accepted evidence, reading out loud its content.
"She was a wicked liar, but her peers didn't see it. She covered it so well like a black cloak covers a devil's horns. But she couldn't escape the all-seeing eye of God."
The whole area fell silent. All of the working staff stopped in their track.
"That's sick." Someone spoke from behind him, surprising them. Off turned around, his eyes meeting with Arm Weerayut Chansook, another charming and intelligent man in his squad. He always knew what to say, unlike him. Arm, Tay and Mew were all 91liners, and that made them good friends.
He had to agree with Arm, though. They need to catch the bastard who did this as soon as possible. He turned back towards Tay, watching him examine that poor soul.
