Chapter 1: To Be the Prey

Start from the beginning

"Sorry," I say. "Just...thought I'd show we're on the same page."

"Pfft," he snorts, the bitterness still there. He leans into the bars of my new cell door. "Don't try to make me laugh. Ghouls and humans on the same page? Is that your idea of some twisted joke?"

I can tell he despises me. He despises humans in general by the looks of it, so I know it's nothing...personal, I suppose. But he hates me.

I shake my head. "No. Just...we're both lost. Neither of us knows why they're keeping me alive. Yet here we are."

He narrows his eyes. "Let's get one thing straight, human. I'm not Eto. I'm not looking to buddy up with some human for amusement. So, for now on, don't talk to me."

With that, he turns, scuffing away in a hunched posture. And just like that, he's gone, leaving me and my sandwich alone. Which is whatever. He wasn't as much of a joy to talk to as -

"Sorry about him," she says, grasping my attention. I turn to see her, dressed in her usual wraps and cloak, fingers laced together. "Ayato isn't one of our most...sociable executives here. He's a bit snarky but he does get the job done."

Eto. Her presence is as it usually is. Lively. Chipper. Seemingly friendly. But I won't lie, there's something different about seeing her in raw, natural sunlight.

"How do you like your upgrade?" she asks.

I glance around my new cell, the light pouring in through the many windows. Barred, of course, but windows nonetheless. Natural light pours in through the glass, filling my cell, enveloping me.

"It's...nice. Has light," I answer.

"I figured you'd like that. It also has electricity."

My eyes widen. "There's electricity? Does that mean...can I charge my phone?"

She giggles, "Baby steps, Y/N. I've already given you one gift by moving you to our presidential suite."

Presidential. Funny. This cell is roughly the same size as the one I was in before. It is a little nicer, though. Brighter, for sure. Has a more private bathroom area in the cell. I mean, it's only a single wall built up in the corner to add some privacy, but it is something.

"That said, I do come bearing gifts," she continues.

I glance at her, watching as she passes a plastic bag through the bars. A bag that I take. My eyes widen as I feel it shift and I realize what it is.

"Are these clean clothes?"

"Yup! Hope ya don't mind. I was in your hotel's neighborhood, so I swung by and picked up a few things for you. And some hygienic items I thought you might need."

I stare into the bag, seeing familiar pieces of clothing. Pieces that smell and are in fact clean. Shirts, shorts, underwear. Then there's shampoo, soap, toothpaste, a toothbrush, and feminine products. All things I've purchased and got since arriving in Tokyo.

"You got these for me?" I ask, looking at her.

She stares at me for a moment. Then nods, "I did. I figured you've spent enough time living in filth. It's the least I can do for my best captive!"

Best captive.

Never a title I imagined I'd wear. Then again, there's a lot of things I never imagined I'd do or experience. Losing my mom. Traveling to Japan alone. Meeting a ghoul. All things I never thought would happen, but here I am. Living those realities.

I nod, smiling faintly, "You do still plan to let me go at some point, right?"

She once again looks at me, most likely taking me in before replying, "At some point, yes. Soon. But we must be patient. After all, good things take time!"

Good things take time. I've heard that so many times before from so many people. Be patient and wait. It'll happen. Good things will come to fruition. Over and over, I've heard that. However, does this logic count when you're a captive?

Honestly, I don't even know.

**Hello, lovelies! The first official chapter is here! Yay! Now, that said...I don't know what happened. One minute, I was in control and the next I wasn't. It was as if I was just in the passenger seat, along for the ride. Which makes writing easy in a way. All I do is channel the story and let it say what it wants. Easy. Kinda. Sorta. Sometimes. Not always. Anyway, how are y'all doin'? Y'all doin' good? I hope so! If not, then I hope things improve! I'm feeling awesome now that I got my labradorite! Been wanting that piece in my collection for a hot minute. Well, that'll do for this chapter. Thank you so, so much for everything! Y'all are awesome sauce! Wuv yous!! <3**
