Kiara's POV:

I spent the afternoon surfing all by myself. I was calming and I felt like I was one with nature and the water. I also couldn't stop thinking about seeing JJ Maybank on the beach this morning.

Everyone in town knew his father, Luke Maybank. He was a drunk abusive father to JJ. He had JJ right out of high school and JJ's mom took off when he was just under two years old. JJ was from the cut but he didn't seem to be anything like his father.

It was getting late and I headed over to Sarah's.

"You look happy.." She smirked at me

I laughed and said, "It was a good day on the beach.."

"Did you meet a hot surfer?"

"Ha, something like that.." I replied

We talked about boys and John B came up and Sarah said, "He just got a job working for my father.."

"That's fun.. He's kinda cute.." I admitted

"He's definitely not ugly but he isn't Topper." Sarah blushed

"You really have a thing for Topper, don't you?"

"Yeah.. We're hanging out tomorrow!"

"Text me and let me know how it goes.." I said leaving to go home for dinner

I got home to my kooky house and my parents were upset that I was late but all was forgiven when they found out I was with Sarah Cameron.

"Kiara, have you found a date to prom yet?" My mom asked with a huge smile on her face

"Not yet.." I said as I never had any intention of going to a stupid prom

"You need to get on that.. Prom is coming up soon and most of the guys already have dates."

"Have you ever thought that maybe I just don't want to go?" I asked getting defensive

"Kie-ara!" My mom said making my name sound longer than it actually was

"I hate the Kook academy. I want to go to the local high school with Pogues. I have nothing in common with anyone at school. All they care about is who got a new boat and who has the most expensive shoes on. No one cares about anything important."

"Do not upset your mother, young lady." My father scolded me

I was so upset that I left the table and stormed out of the house and I walked to Sarah's house and found out she was going to prom with Topper.

Of course. Just what I wanted to hear about. Prom talk.

JJ's POV:

I spent the night hanging with John B and Pope. We had a fire, made smores, drank some beers, and had fun.

This was a typical night for us. We all crashed at his place. It was like a second house to me. John B and I have been friends since grade school. He knew my father's tendencies and his father, Big John welcomed me anytime.

I had gotten pretty used to crashing on their couch. I was so lucky to have these two guys in my life. Without them, I would have no one.

My mom took off when I was a baby and I haven't heard from her since. I have one picture of my family. My dad is holding me and he looks proud. My mom is next to us. My dad has his arm wrapped around her and we looked like the picture-perfect family.

"Dudes, did you hear that my father got me a job working for Ward?" John B asked us

"Ward, as in Ward Cameron?" I asked

"Yeah.." John B said in disbelief

Pope said, "Congrats man.. You'll be racking in the dough"

I patted his back and said, "And the hoe.."

The boys burst out laughing knowing that I was referring to Ward's daughter, the Kook princess, Sarah Cameron.

We spent the night laughing. It didn't take much for the three of us to have a good time. It was part of being a Pogue.
