Hog's Head
Aberforth had arranged a private room for Dumbledore and Minerva at the Hog's Head, ensuring they had the privacy they needed to discuss the retrieval of Marvolo Gaunt's ring.
Seated across from each other, the two were deep in discussion, formulating a plan to infiltrate the Gaunt house and duplicate the ring without arousing suspicion.
After thorough deliberation, they settled on a strategy—if they worked diligently for the next two days, they could retrieve the ring on the third.
Their plan was precise: they would use Hermione's Invisibility Cloak to sneak inside, cast a protective barrier around themselves before entering, and locate the ring. Once found, they would replace it with an identical duplicate, ensuring no one noticed its absence. Upon returning to Hogwarts, the real ring would be safeguarded in Dumbledore's office under powerful enchantments.
By executing their plan carefully, Voldemort would remain oblivious. By the time he realized his Horcruxes were being targeted, it would be too late—each one would already be destroyed.
They also made a crucial note: under no circumstances should the ring be touched before dispelling the curses and enchantments surrounding it.
~ Break brought to you by Fred Weasley ~Two Days Later
Two days had passed since the plan was set in motion. In that time, Minerva and Dumbledore had worked tirelessly, preparing every last detail. Now, they were finally ready.
At precisely 10:00 PM, Minerva retrieved the Invisibility Cloak from Hermione, casting Engorgio to expand it, ensuring it could accommodate both of them. (A/N: Because obviously, it wouldn't fit otherwise 😂) She grabbed the duplicate ring, and with a final glance at Dumbledore, they Apparated near a lake close to the Gaunt house.
As they approached the abandoned home, its decrepit state was immediately apparent—it wasn't just old, it was practically crumbling. There were no guards, only a few protective spells placed around the perimeter.
Dumbledore, ever the master of spellwork, carefully dismantled the wards one by one, ensuring Voldemort remained unaware of their intrusion.
Slipping inside through the back door, they illuminated their wands with Lumos and began their search.
The basement yielded nothing but dust-covered crates and forgotten relics. The first floor was similarly barren, filled with useless, discarded belongings. However, Dumbledore knew Tom Riddle well—he wouldn't hide something so precious in plain sight.
Their search led them to the library, where Minerva noticed something unusual—a small hidden door concealed behind a bookshelf.
Checking for protective spells, they found none. With a shared glance, they stepped inside.
There it was.
The ring gleamed unnaturally, its golden band casting an eerie glow in the dim room.
For a moment, Dumbledore stood frozen, completely entranced by it. His fingers twitched, as if compelled to slip the ring onto his hand.
But before he could act, Minerva, recalling Hermione's warning, grabbed his arm firmly, shaking him out of his trance.
Snapping back to reality, Dumbledore took a sharp breath. Wasting no time, they got to work, dispelling the dark curses surrounding the ring as quickly as they could, uncertain if tampering with it would trigger any alarms.
Once the ring was safe to touch, they swapped it with the perfect replica, placing the real Horcrux inside a magically reinforced box. They ensured the room was left exactly as they had found it, removing all traces of their presence.
With their mission complete, they Apparated directly back to Dumbledore's office.
As a final precaution, they rechecked the ring, confirming that everything had gone according to plan. Before leaving, they reinstated the same protective enchantments Voldemort had placed on the original, ensuring that when he came to check, he would suspect nothing.
At last, they allowed themselves to exhale.
Relief washed over them, but exhaustion followed swiftly. So much had happened in such a short time—it was overwhelming.
After exchanging quiet goodbyes, they went their separate ways, burdened with mixed emotions.
They had taken a crucial step towards victory, but the war was far from over.
Happiness lingered at the thought of their growing advantage, but so did fear—fear of the battles yet to come. How many innocent lives would be lost before it was over?
For now, they could only move forward.
