Chapter 5: planning and progress

Start from the beginning

She walked over to the book that was smacked out of her hand. The title read "Dungeon Oratoria." A book filled with tales of a time long past. Tales of legendary heroes.

She bent down and picked up. She cast the book a simple blank stare. She flipped it open and reached the page she was on when she was interrupted. Her expression darkened as she continued to read the book.

Upon finishing the chapter she slammed the book shut with both hands.

She took a deep breath. Placing the book on the coffee table in front of the couch and leaves the rundown cabin. She had places to go and dwelling in one spot for too long would do her no good.

Besides, someone new had entered the battlefield. One absolutely invaluable to her. However, this person was in the absolute worst position for her. They became nigh-impossible for her to gain. Which was why she needed to start now. It may be difficult, but as long as the chances weren't 0 she was willing to go all-in. It was just about her only choice and lamenting over the unfairness of the situation would simply be time wasted.

So how will I go about this? Pondered the girl as a scheming smile grew on her face.

(1 month later...)

(Rimuru POV)

A sizable party of battered adventures stood before me. They look like they had just been put through a really hard battle. So why do they point their weapons at me?

It doesn't seem like they're underestimating me. At least if the despair and fear that was scrawled across their face upon my arrival was anything to go by. And they were practically on death's door as it was. So why are they willing to fight against me? Hell, why were they so scared in the first place.  It's not like my appearance is particularly threatening. So what's the deal?

They do have some capable fighters but as they are I couldn't imagine them taking even some of the monsters I had just met.

The first person I took note of was A Beautiful female knight who seemed to be 14 to 16. She had golden hair and golden eyes, she had a hardened expression, eyes boring into me. Her sword, which seemed to be of medium length, was at the ready.

Behind her were two people, others of slightly lower strength. One was a girl with tan skin. She had shorter hair that was black and messy. She was wearing very skimpy clothing despite being as flat as a cutting board and looked more of the age of 12-14. Unlike the female knight, she had a comically impractically large sword strapped to her. However, she was welding a double edge that was just as if not more impractical than the other weapon.

The person standing at the ready next to her was a werewolf with grey white messy hair and damn was he ripped he had like an eight pack. He wore a jacket that was also grey and showed his eight pack and looked to be anywhere from 18- 22. He held two short swords but the boots he wore also seemed to also be a weapon of sorts.

<<Answer. The gem in the middle seems to absorb magical energy, the damage around that area suggest he uses them to attack>>

Huh is that so... I think at great Sage's report.

Moving on there was another girl with tan skin who unlike the other girl had an excuse to wear skimpy clothing. She was big, maybe a little smaller than Shion, but nothing to scoff at. Anyway, she seems to be 17-20 and she had longer hair than the other tan-skinned girl as well. She had two curved knives at the ready as well as a few extra throwing knives. On top of that, she seemed to wield a halberd of sorts.

There was a small boy next to her that looked around 8-10 and had short blonde hair but despite his age looked to be the leader he seemed to be in deep focus about something though. His eyes were analyzing me. He had two spears, one with a gold tip which he was pointing at me.

There was also a typical dwarf with heavy armor and a massive shield. He had two axes at the ready and seemed rather reliable.

And last but not least, an Elf. The elf who easily towered over everyone else seemed to be a mage as Elves tend to be, and had green hair tied into a ponytail. She had a refined look as you would expect from an elf and seemed to be anywhere from 25-30 but knowing elves she could be much older. She had a staff as mages tend to have.

Oh, and there was another Elf, she seemed significantly weaker than the others. She had Blonde hair with an orange tint to it and she had it in a ponytail but it was so long it kind of flowed out of the ponytail shape into normal hair. She seemed to also be a mage and she seemed kinda out of place and very shy about 14-16. Out of everyone the look on her face suggested she had given up on all hope of living.

Look, I don't want to fight either. Why are you so terrified? I deadpan in my head.

"Who are you?" asked the small child

He held a spear at the ready. Despite his commanding voice, one glance at his face would tell you he wasn't as confident as he may seem. Sweat drenched his face and the fear in his eyes was unmistakable.

I put my hands up in surrender, but the moment I began to move everyone in front of me tensed.

Umm, why are you guys acting like I'm some uncontrollable beast? I asked in my head.

"Relax, I don't want to fight," I say. Some of the group look at each other and start whispering to each other. But, they don't seem convinced by my words in the least. I resist the urge to sigh.

"You're with the red-haired tamer aren't you?" accused the small child.

?

Red-haired tamer?

Who?

Forget red hair, I've never met anyone since coming here, period.

"Umm who? I'm sorry I have no clue what you're talking about." I responded to his question. Everyone in the group is still tense.  they don't seem to belive me or if they do they  still see me as a threat.

"Then how did you get to the 51st floor? We should be the only ones to ever have gotten this far."

Oh So this is the 51st floor? So does that mean that I was born on the 56th floor or the 46th floor? The environment has changed 5 times now. If I assume a section with one type of environment equals 1 floor, I should've been born on the 46th or 56th depending on if this is a tower-like structure or a dungeon-like one. Well more importantly than that right now the answer to their question...

Hmm, somehow I suspect it won't bode well If I tell them I'm a slime. They're suspicious of me enough as is, if they find out I'm a monster things might just get worse.

Playing dumb will just make me more suspicious at this point.

The best thing I can try now would be to dodge the question.

"More importantly than this is no place to have a leisurely discussion over tea," I state. However, I wasn't just saying that as a way to avoid the topic of my backstory. Cracks began to form on the walls. Monsters were going to come soon. I motion towards said cracks to get my point across. They were clearly hesitant to allow me to stay in their group until we found a safe spot to have a nice chat. I mean who wouldn't? But they had little to no choice as they didn't have the stamina to fight off monsters while asking me questions. At least not after the intense fight they had just had. Realizing this the child reluctantly lowers his weapon, and seeing this the group does the same.

He must be the leader. I infer.

"Would you like me to walk in front of you?" I ask the child.

At my suggestion, he looks at me perplexed for a moment. All fear that was once evident on his face is gone. Although that doesn't mean he was no longer being cautious, he did seem more curious than anything.

After a moment of hesitation, he nodded, "If you would."

I walk past the group and start towards the exit with the child close behind me.

My first interaction with people in this world. Let's hope nothing bad happens.
