Before light had come clean about being Kira, their bond was built upon lies and tests, tricks and schemes. But even despite that, they both always knew their counterpart like the back of their hand.
If Light looked deeply into L's eyes sometimes he felt like he could confess the truth without having to leave a trace or say a word, as if he could say "I am Kira" by simply locking eye contact.
Perhaps Ryuzaki got the message and maybe that's why he would only steal glances when Light wasn't looking. Perhaps the truth, despite him being sure that already knew it, was too painful to be clarified.
He questioned everything the boy said. Knowing that there was a large chance that every word he spoke aloud was a lie. But the day when he was in confinement after Light begged to let him out, he told L to look into his eyes and ask himself if they looked like the eyes of someone who was lying. After locking his gaze with light over the surveillance screen he could've sworn something had changed... In his eyes he was almost completely sure he saw innocence, the truth had changed hadn't it? But how and why and would the liar he once knew ever return?
Where had this sudden assurance of his morality come from?
He didn't know much right then, how could he? But as everything played out Light was let out and eventually he was able to get Light's guess to confirm his theory by asking him, since he'd lost his memories did he do it purposely or was some other being responsible. Though reluctant, Light told him what he thought and ended up coming to the same conclusion that Ryuzaki did, he had done so by his own will.
