We're floating away, my body's in space,
Jake tugged her hand again, and this time, Yeonhee looked at him. He patted the wooden boards beside him and stuck out his lower lip cutely, eyebrows furrowed.
"Lie downnnn. It's easier on the neck."
Yeonhee laughed at his adorable display of sulkiness and finally lay down beside him, staring up at the deep blue heavens.
The sky looked so close, and if she closed her eyes and held her breath, she could feel herself floating up, up, towards the blue, away from the ground, weightless and fluid. She was flying. Floating. Free.
We are going home.
But Jake's tightening grip on her hand brought her back to earth. She turned her head to look at him. Her ear was pressed to the dock, and looking into his caramel eyes, she realized that she could hear their heartbeats echo through the thick boards of the pier. Synchronized. Steady. Solid. Their hearts were beating at the same time. Almost as if they were one.
And at that moment, Yeonhee realized that she couldn't go home. Because with Jake, she was home. As long as he was there, she was safe. But she would rather be safe than free?
