"Thestrals? Why am I the only one seeing them?" Bea looked over your head, presumably looking at the boys who were suddenly very quiet, then looking back to you she explained, "Thestrals can only be seen by those who have witnessed death."
You swallowed heavily, the image of flashing green and unseeing eyes briefly passed through your mind, "oh, I see."
Fred somehow sensed your mood taking a turn so put an arm around your shoulders, "come on let's get moving, that Start of Term Feast isn't going to eat itself." You smiled at him gratefully and you all made your way to the carriages, you sat with your back to the strange creatures and pretended they weren't there as you were brought up to the castle.
---
After the annual Sorting Ceremony was over, which almost sent you to sleep at your table, the tables finally filled with delicious hot food and you all eagerly piled up your plates. Once dessert was finished and all the crumbs and empty plates and goblets disappeared, Dumbledore stood up, signalling that he was going to make a few announcements.
"Finally!" you said to the twins who sat beside you. You had all waited long enough to find out what was going on this year and to learn what the reason behind all the secrecy was.
"So!" said Dumbledore with a smile, "now that we are fed and watered, I must ask once more for your attention while I give out a few notices. Mr. Filch, the caretaker, has asked me to tell you that the list of objects forbidden inside the castle this year has been extended to include Screaming Yo-yos, Fanged Frisbees, and Ever-Bashing Boomerangs. The full list comprises some four hundred and thirty-seven items, I believe, and can be viewed in Mr. Filch's office if anybody would like to check it."
"That's likely," the twins said in unison, making you laugh because you knew Filch's list of prohibited items acted more as a to-do list for them rather than discouraging them from causing trouble.
Dumbledore continued with his usual warnings about the Forbidden Forest being, well, forbidden, as was Hogsmeade to first and second years. But what he said next made you gasp and almost stand from your seat in protest, along with about three-quarters of the student population.
"It is also my painful duty to inform you that the Inter-house Quidditch Cup will not take place this year," he said, taking a moment to allow the students to protest.
"That's bollocks!" Fred and George said at the same time.
"No way!" You cried in objection and similar shouts were thrown echoed by many other students across the hall.
Dumbledore held up his hand to silence the angry chatter of the hall, "this is due to an event that will be starting in October and continuing throughout the school year, taking up much of the teachers' time and energy but I am sure you will all enjoy it immensely. I have great pleasure in announcing that this year at Hogwarts-"
The door of the Great Hall slammed open, making you all jump, and an odd figure made his way to the teacher's table. He walked with a large staff that made a loud clunking noise on the stone floor with every other step he took, his wild greying hair, scarred face and strange magical eye unnerved you, and judging by the deafening silence in the hall, everyone else had the same feeling. Once he reached Dumbledore, they shook hands and had a quiet exchange between them before the Headmaster turned back to face the students, "may I introduce our new Defence against the Dark Arts Teacher, Professor Moody."
"Moody? As in Mad-Eye Moody?" Fred exclaimed, his interest peaking suddenly.
"It looks like him! He's a nutter," George whispered, shaking his head, his eyes glued to the strange new addition to the Hogwarts faculty. "Do you know him?" You asked them.
