your eyes scanned the city, ah. very blank. well, it seems your idea was a no-go for now. monsters and humans were both very busy with their schedules. after all, it was 5pm. everyone was probably out at bars or just got off work. sighing, you clutched many books you rented over the past few weeks within your rightmost hand, pressing them against your chest for balance. you gave a small wave at the person driving across the road, them stopping at your signal so you could cross.
frankly, your mission so far had been a failure. humans were very bad at learning about monsters it seemed, which was fair. monsters were the exact same about humans. it was like a yin and yang; very inconvenient to your job but you supposed it was how society worked.
eyes gazing up at the familiar dark academia esq building you are oh so familiar with. you were here. finally.
shuffling, you stared at the giant 'librarby' sign. they still hadn't fixed that. but it was part of the charm in the ancient building if anything, awakening a sort of optimism in your soul. you opened the door with your left hand and nearly pissed yourself at what you were greeted with, eyes wide at such a sight.
so... here is where majority of the towns population was. monsters reading books, humans checking them out, almost everywhere. you felt bad for the people or monsters that had to man the counters, as they all seemed to be struggling with everything on their plate while clients slowly grew cranky. this was the most of the two you'd ever seen in one area, and they were almost all civilized with eachother.
you turned to the book drop off box, taking around eight sticky notes from the counter as you scrawled your name and your other library information on all of them before carefully sticking them to your books. turning them in through the slide in, at least that was taken care of.
as you went to leave, you overheard a confrontation. eyes suddenly training time the yelling and panic that seemed to be distressing the whole library.
"you fucking gremlin! how dare you!" you stared in despair as a human seemed to blame a monster child for being the cause their books dropped on the floor, distress sprouting in your soul as the monster began to panic, tears forming in their eyes at the situation.
they were a child. how insensitive to blame it on them, they surely didn't mean to knock over their books; especially with the guilt they held in their gestures.
"i-i'm sorry! i didn't mean to it was an accident i swear..." they cried out, their expression seemingly growing more stressed with every passing second.
the black-haired man grabbed the monsters turtleneck harshly before your patience finally snapped. that's enough.
before anything else could happen, you marched over to the confrontation. grabbing the man's wrists harshly as he held onto the monsters clothing, you stared angrily into his eyes.
"that's enough, sir. let go. they did nothing wrong." your voice firm as he seemed to scowl. you wished society wasn't as blind as it was. but hell, wasn't that what caused many of the wars among the humans anyways? just stupid, petty disagreements that lead to even more unnecessary death? it needed to stop eventually, and you'd be damned if you weren't the reason it stopped.
the man seemed to scoff, underestimating your abilities and not easing up his grip on the poor child. "or what?"
you would've pulled a sword on this man, but you knew the libraries rules consisted of 'no magic'. so you simply pinched his wrist with your nails very harshly. the man yelped, letting go very fast. he didn't want any trouble.
noticing the eyes placed on him, he quickly picked up his books in a very embarrassed manner. glaring back at you as you placed your hands on your hips, but he found no words to be said and took his swift leave out the door, being signalled by a small jingle bell.
good, and stay out.
the crowds gaze lingered on you both for a moment, before they turned their heads back to mind their business and the peace was resumed.
"thank you..." the monster simply replied, a wide smile on their face, their fluffy cheeks causing their eyes to smile too. the childlike joy reminded you of yourself in your younger days.
"of course, my pleasure. now. do you need help getting some books?" the monster simply nodded at you with a thankful expression, and you were happy to lend a hand.
-
"thank you.. uh." they paused, staring at you with their big green eyes as if awaiting a response. right, they did not know your name.
"oh, my bad. my name is charlie. charlie fischer." you smiled softly, the goat child nodded as you carefully handed them their few pictures books they selected. they were endlessly grateful for your kind actions that you didn't necessarily have to do.
"thank you so much charlie! i'll remember your help!" the goat looking child smiled a small toothed grin, scampering off to go find their parents; a smile remaining on your face until they were out of view. dropping your masked joy, a soft sigh as you went back to your business, you needed to find a reliable monster client. surely they would know.
or honestly, you should probably do it another day. monsters might think you're a creep if you just walk up and ask them 'hey, what do you know about your soul and magic?'
yeah. that's a no go. maybe it was better to make an application forum and post it on a website monsters frequently checked. or.. you could ask the king and queen for help, they're allied and protect the humans after all. surely they wouldn't mind. though it was a bold action, it could work.
you would just need to get recognized and sort out a time.
glancing around for anymore trouble makers, you realized all was well as many monsters began to relax and humans left with their books. a small smile coaxing your expression as you left through the door, the small ding of the bell as you made your way home. tomorrow was another day full of hopes and dreams.
