Chapter 43: The Reunion

Start from the beginning

Lee walked you up to Gryffindor Tower and told you he'd wait for you in the common room while you packed. You stepped into the empty room and levitated your trunk onto your bed, using magic to pack since you were working with one arm. Lyra was perched on the window sill outside and you let her in, she fluttered around your head affectionately before perching on your shoulder and nibbling her beak lightly on your cheek. You set her down on the bedpost and she sat quietly as you flicked your wand around to fold and pile up your clothes, folding up the uniform you would never wear again and stacking your books into a pile inside your trunk.

When you'd finished packing, you took a moment to look around the room you'd slept in for seven years and took it all in, you wiped a tear from your eye as the reality of leaving hit you, it was bittersweet but you were ready for the next chapter of your life.

You were excited to see the twins again, having not seen them in six weeks, and while they'd written regularly it just wasn't the same as being with them, especially Fred who you'd frequently just wanted a hug from. You were very happy to be informed by them that you wouldn't need to drag their trunks along with you as well as their own, they'd packed and shrunken their trunks and put them in the satchels they'd each had with them when they left. The more you thought about them the more eager you were to see them again, so you scanned your room one last time and then levitated your trunk and shouldered your bag, Lyra obediently hopped into her cage and then you left the room, looking back once more before closing the door behind you.

Lee was waiting in the common room for you as he said he would, and he gave you a big hug, careful not to squish your injured arm, "let's go, shall we?" You grinned and nodded, looking around the homey common room once more before you both made your way down to the carriages. You met the Trio, Ginny, Neville and Luna as you got off the carriages and Lee marvelled at the stories of the previous night's events as you walked the rest of the way to the station in Hogsmeade. You also took the opportunity to relentlessly tease Ron about his behaviour under the Confundus Charm and he flipped you off, "piss off, Y/N," but he grinned anyway and bumped his shoulder against your good arm.

You noticed Harry hanging back a bit so you walked with him while Lee talked to Ron and Ginny. "How are you doing, Harry?" He was quiet for a minute then he answered, "I don't know if it's hit me yet. I just don't want to accept that he's-" he broke off and then cleared his throat, "that he's gone."

You nodded in understanding, then you grabbed his hand and squeezed it, "the people we love are never really gone." That seemed to cheer him up and he looked at you and squeezed your hand back gratefully, "you know, Sirius told me the very same thing."

Your eyes welled up with tears at that and you pulled him into a quick but firm hug with your good arm, "when it does hit you, you know where I am," you told him earnestly after pulling back and he gave you a small smile, "thanks, Y/N."

He grew thoughtful for a moment and then he spoke up to everyone else, "I've been thinking about something Dumbledore said to me."

"What's that?" Hermione asked him and he smiled at you all as he answered, "that even though we've got a fight ahead of us, we've got one thing that Voldemort doesn't have."

"Yeah?" Ron asked and Harry nodded, "something worth fighting for."

---

You walked slowly down the platform and looked over at the train with a sad sigh, wheeling your trunk with Lyra's cage tied to the top of it along behind you. You were going to miss the endless hours of idle chatter you'd spent on that train with the twins and Lee, though you knew you'd all be together again before too long. Lee had given you a hug a few minutes beforehand and he'd told you he'd see you soon as he ran off to find his parents. You glanced solemnly at the train again and then you stopped to let Lyra out of her cage and sent her to the Burrow so she could stretch her wings. You watched as she flapped her wings and flew out of sight, and then you looked around for the twins, who'd promised to meet you on the platform.
