*Three years earlier*
"Okay, my worst breakup ever...." I took a second to think about it, "Zoey Winter, sophomore year in college. I... I got drunk and made out with another girl at a party. She saw. Vases were thrown at my head. It was great." I said sarcastically, pushing thoughts of Zoey out of my mind and taking a sip of coffee.
If I were honest, she was the love of my life. She'd even loved me in spite of my 'flock of seagulls' haircut, and I'd thrown it all away. From time to time I thought about calling her and trying to fix it, but I couldn't see how she would ever forgive me. I tried to move on, but I couldn't. Not really.
I saw her name everywhere; her favourite flowers, lilies, displayed outside the florist; glancing at her favourite movie, The Truman Show, on the shelf at the store. I saw her face in strangers; I heard her voice in crowds. She was still my everything, even when she wasn't supposed to be anymore.
"Come on, Chandler, it's just a game." said Monica, nudging me with her elbow. "I've gotta go, my shift at the restaurant starts in half an hour. We have a table for five to spare if you guys want some free food."
One by one, my friends politely declined: Joey had an audition; Rachel and Ross had a date; Phoebe had a massage client. "Well, I have a date with Ben, Jerry and Truman tonight, but... they won't mind if I cancel." I smirked, allowing Monica to pull me up from the chair and lead me to the door of Central Perk and down the street towards her restaurant.
Shoving my hands in my pockets as the wind chill bit my skin, Monica and I weaved through the crowds on 5th Avenue.
"You were really going to eat ice cream and watch Zoey's favourite movie tonight?" asked Monica.
"I'm just in a bit of a slump, dating-wise," I mumbled. "When I'm alone, I think about her. I miss her."
"It's been five years, Chandler. Maybe you should try to move on."
"I've tried and I've failed. She was it. She was the love of my life. I blew it." I noticed I'd raised my voice a little and abruptly fell into silence.
After finding my place at a small table at the back of the restaurant, I'd been waiting for my food for about half an hour when I started to glance towards the kitchen. Were my eyes playing tricks on me? No.... there was smoke creeping slowly through the gap under the door. I looked around for a waiter, but none were in sight. I took matters into my own hands, darting into the kitchen only to see a large fire at one of the stoves.
"Get back from there!" I shouted, grabbing a fire blanket. Monica was nowhere to be seen. Before I could get to the fire, a chef grabbed a cup of water and attempted to throw it on the flames before I could stop him. This only added fuel to it, and with a whoosh the entire kitchen was engulfed in the blaze. "Everyone get out! Someone call for help! Where's Monica?" I tried to shout as my voice went hoarse from the smoke.
"She was by the stove!" called a waitress. I forced myself to crawl towards the stove, and there lay an unconscious Monica, her dark hair singed and her forearms, neck and face clearly severely burned. I scooped her up into my arms and found my way through the smoke to the outside exit, where the fire department and ambulance had already arrived.
Paramedics rushed over to help, and I followed them as they took Monica to the ambulance. "She's unconscious... will she be okay? Oh, god... I should've gotten there sooner, I could've helped more..."
"Hey, you've been enough of a hero today," said one of the paramedics. "You did everything you could. We will too."
I watched as they attended to her. I watched every detail; I watched as they cleaned and bandaged her burns, attached an oxygen mask, hooked her up to all manner of drips and machines. I went numb as the urgency grew in their eyes; as they started pumping her chest, injecting more drugs, trying to restart her heart.... and then admitting defeat.
