Newt POV

"Newt! Come on, we gotta go!" Winston yelled at the boy, grabbing his arms, and tugging him backward, pulling him out of the tunnel. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Minho pulling Frypan along as well, practically dragging him.

Newt shook off Winston's arms and trudged over to Frypan, sticking his hand towards him, a solemn look in his eyes. The other boy looked up at him, tears streaming down his face, before grabbing his hand and pulling himself to his feet. They stepped out of the small doorway into a long corridor, the lights slowly flicking on, one by one. Newt trudged forward, feeling an empty numbness in his mind. It wasn't sadness, or anger, it was just numb.

They all moved through the corridor, at the end of it was a large door with a green glowing light next to it. Above the door was a conveniently placed sign stating, "Exit."

"Seriously?" Winston scoffed. Thomas walked forward, pushing the handle down and opening the door. Newt heard an alarm sounding from the other side of it as they all stepped inside the doorway.

Scattered all over the floor were various bodies, people in white coats now stained with blood. Newt felt the hairs on the back of his neck rise as his eyes moved over the various bodies around them, he noticed Minho staring at two beds covered with blood-stained white sheets and placed an arm on his shoulder, moving him forward.

"What happened here?" He heard Winston mumble as they all stepped over the body of a man some sort of black gear, a gun resting near his hand. They walked into a type of research area, filled with screens and buttons everywhere. Newt walked over to a few screens that showed different camera angles of the glade, glancing over them before turning to Frypan,

"So, they were watching us. This whole time." He said, feeling a sudden anger rise from inside him at the fact that the people who sat behind the screens could've prevented countless deaths from happening.

He continued staring at the screen, watching as the cameras moved around before walking off, staring around at the various other monitors surrounding them. Suddenly a woman's voice sounded from behind him, and he spun around, seeing a pale blonde woman with blue eyes speaking in some sort of recording.

"Hello. My name is Dr Ava Paige. I'm director of operations at the World Catastrophe Killzone Department. If you're watching this, that means you've successfully completed the maze trials." Newt stepped forward, joining the rest of the group as they crowded in front of the recording. "I wish I could be there in person to congratulate you, but circumstances seem to have prevented it. I'm sure by now you must all be very confused, angry, frightened. I can only assure you that everything that's happened to you, everything we've done to you, it was all done for a reason."

Newt looked around at the others, all of them sharing the same look of confusion as the woman in the recording kept speaking.

"You won't remember, but the sun has scorched our world. Billions of lives lost to fire, famine, suffering on a global scale. The fallout was unimaginable."

He felt the bile rising in his throat as pictures of burnt bodies piled high in the streets came up on the screen and he turned his head away slightly.

"What came after was worse. We called it The Flare. A deadly virus that attacks the brain. It is violent. Unpredictable. Incurable. Or so we thought. In time a new generation emerged, that could survive the virus, and suddenly there was a reason to hope for a cure. But finding it would not be easy. The young would have to be tested, even sacrificed, inside harsh environments where their brain activity could be studied. All in an effort to understand what makes them different. What makes you different. You may not realize it, but you're very important. Unfortunately, your trials have only just begun. As you'll no doubt soon discover, not everyone agrees with our methods. Progress is slow, people are scared. It may be too late for us, for me. But not for you. The outside world awaits you. Just remember-" The woman reached to her side, pulling out a pistol and pointing it at her own head, before uttering 3 final words,
