Chapter 64: The Death Cure

Start from the beginning

"Please. Please. Help me, please. Let me in!" she begged, desperately trying to open the locked door. Soon, more Cranks appeared, all doing their best to reach us.

"FLOOR IT, LIV!" Thomas screamed. I did.

As you would expect, someone with no driving experience trying to expertly manoeuvre through vehicles scattered across a very dimly lit place at a high speed while getting chased by very dangerous things would not end well.

I hit something, and it sent us flying, completely putting our car out of commission. We quickly got out and was about to make a run for it when we were circled by even more Cranks.

Fry started shooting them with a shotgun, but he ran out of ammo way too soon for my liking.

I guess this is it, then.

Then another car broke through the swarm.

"GET IN!" Brenda yelled, popping out from the roof, a pistol in hand, shooting Cranks.

"I'm impressed. You guys almost lasted the whole day," Jorge teased.

"I'm sorry," Thomas apologised. "I didn't wanna bring you guys into this."

"I think what he's trying to say is thanks for saving us," Fry said.

"You're welcome," Brenda answered.

"Hey, don't get your hopes up. That checkpoint back there, that was the city's last defence. If that was overrun, chances are the city is too," Jorge told us.

"Yeah, unless they figured out some other way to keep the Cranks out," Newt observed, looking out the window.

We got out, all wondering what the hell had happened here.

"Funny... Spent three years trapped behind walls trying to break out, and now we wanna break back in," Newt joked.

"Jorge, how do we get in?" Thomas asked.

"Don't look at me, hermano. Those walls are new. I guess that's WCKD's answer for everything."

"Well, we ain't gonna figure it out from up here. Let's go!" Brenda got back in the car. I followed. "Hey, Olivia, are you ok?" she asked me, her eyebrows knitted together in concern. I gave her a nod in response. "You haven't said a word since we found you. What did they do to you?" I remained silent, the memories still too raw and new to talk about.

Luckily, our conversation was cut short as others came and sat down with us, ready to go.

We parked up behind a large protest, very close to the Wall.

"We are the voice of the voiceless! They hide behind their walls, thinking they can keep the Cure for themselves, while they watch the rest of us either and rot! But there are more of us than there age of them. And I say we rise up and take back what is ours! Let's bring back a victory!" A man with a speaker said, the people here with us clearly in support of what he was telling them. He was on top of a car, a procession of others following him with more men sitting on the roofs of them.

One of them stood out to me in particular.

An involuntary gasp left my mouth. His face was covered by a make-shift gas mask, his eyes by a red visor, but I was sure I recognised those arms resting in his lap, those hands that clutched a gun, that broad chest I used to fall asleep on every night.

That surely couldn't be him, right? Be Gally? Right?

"Liv? Something wrong?" Newt mumbled, as Possible Gally turned his head to watch me as his car drove by. I nodded my head, and then turned to look at another direction, away from the man.

I shook off the wave of nausea that followed the sight, and followed my friends. We pushed our way to the front, Thomas' curiosity once again fuelling his actions.

"Thomas, this is not what you're looking for! All these people trying to find their way in, you think you're gonna find they can't?"

"We came this far, I'm not turning back now!"

"What the hell did we get ourselves into?" Fry asked, looking around.

"Thomas, this doesn't feel right!" Jorge warned.

"Hey, guys, we gotta go now. Look," Newt said, worried about the men that seemed to be following us.

A deafening silence washed over the crowd as machinery seemed to power up. Whatever it was, it didn't look good.

Explosives were fired at us as we rushed for safety, but many people were hit, were killed. I'd bet my right arm that Janson ordered this attack.

Half way through our escape, we were harshly thrown into vehicles by people who looked like they were part of a group along with those men on cars from earlier.

We drove for what felt like an eternity. Eventually we came to a stop and were escorted out the back of the vans, guns pointed at us.

Fighting could be heard from inside one of them, and as two bodies flew out - Jorge's and a man's - I was sure it was because he was separated from Brenda and was worried about her.

Luckily, Brenda managed to calm him down by making her presence known to him.

"Everybody relax! We're all on the same side here!" A voice told us. It was Possible Gally. He sounded so similar to Actual Gally. I knew it couldn't be him, though. I watched him die. I watched Minho put a spear through his chest.

"What do you mean 'same side'? Who the hell are you?"

Possible Gally took off his mask hesitantly.

Time seemed to freeze. It seemed to stop. Nothing made sense. Gally - my Gally - couldn't be here, alive, standing in front of all of us.

Unless we were dead, too. Maybe those explosives killed us and we didn't even know.

My knees buckled as I took him in. He was older now, his hair was shorter, he had somehow gotten even taller, but there was no mistaking it. It was him.

Newt and Fry caught me before I landed on the ground, worry etched onto their face.

"Liv, are you alright?" Fry asked. Unable to speak, I nodded.

Panic rose in my chest, suffocating me. Suddenly the room was too small and there wasn't enough oxygen. I began desperately gulping in large breaths of air, but it seemed to do nothing. It felt like I was choking.

Unexplainable fear blinded me, made me unable to think, to move. I barely registered Newt gently lower me to the ground. I barely saw his face in front of mine as his echoey voice that seemed a million miles away told me to breathe (real helpful, I know) slowly. Inhale through my nose, exhale out my mouth.

Eventually, I managed to calm down slightly, enough to start processing the mess of my life currently.

"Hey, Greenie."

A/n: I'm so happy Gally's finally back omg.

But, like, you guys might hate me in the next chapter when it comes to Gally and Liv's reunion, but you just have to trust me, ok??
