This was the precise time it took for Lan Wangji's brain to make the decision to chase after him. Of course, he didn't know this.
But it took exactly 36 seconds.
He grabbed his phone, the car keys and his wallet, and rushed out, never even bothering to lock the front door. This was so... insignificant right now.
The elevator took forever to climb up – he never really realized that Wei Ying was still travelling down – so he took the stairs, running, rushing, taking a couple of steps at a time, breathless, in a frenzy, in a hurry.
Panting horribly, he arrived downstairs in the foyer just in time to see a young, pretty woman invite Wei Ying into a monster car, a Mercedes that swallowed him whole soon enough.
He had been so very thin after the surgery...
Lan Wangji's heart sank. He pushed the glass doors open, far too dizzy to care if he broke anything, and just stared at the plate number, trying hard to focus and remember the combination of letters and numbers.
Never before in his life had he ever reached the underground car park at such a speed, and gotten the poor Audi onto the road, almost getting its tyres bursting. His head was spinning so badly that it seemed like all of it took just a second, a single blink of the eye.
Quite desperate, he followed the general direction in which the huge expensive car had disappeared, but his hope of finding it in all the traffic was... meagre.
He drove on and on, looking for the unmistakable make, staring until his eyes hurt.
No. The car had disappeared into thin air.
Was this a kidnapping?! Had someone forced Wei Ying into... something? All this money meant only trouble, and he knew it quite well. In the past couple of days his loved one seemed so distant, so far away, avoiding him...
Who ever knew about it? Who might it have been?!
Apart from the two of them, it was just his Ge and his firm that had information about any of it... but this was all strictly confidential, and he doubted the law agency would ever risk its reputation for just a couple of millions.
Then... was it Jenny's father?
His blood froze.
His mind was drawing the awfullest pictures, drawing heavily on any and all action movies he had ever watched in his life.
But then... there was a worse scenario... Worse than all of the above.
He'd gladly give away all his money, all the money in the world, just to have Wei Ying safe in his arms again. But what if...
That woman... That pretty, dainty woman, in her pretty, expensive car...
