"WCKD has something we both want," Thomas argued.
"I'll tell you what: two can go for now. The rest can stay down here with me. Just a little insurance to make sure you find your way back. We have a deal?" Thomas shook Lawrence's outstretched hand. "Gally, show them the way."
Gally lifted a drain cover and slid a ladder down as guilt gnawed at me. I couldn't let him, along with Newt and Thomas, go to the Last City without telling them what I knew. The less surprises they get while they're there, the better.
"Wait!" I called, just as Gally started climbing down the ladder. He stopped just as every head turned to face me.
"What is it, Liv?" Newt asked.
"There's something you should know," I said.
"We don't have time, Liv. We need to go." Gally had an irritated expression on his face.
"It's important," I told him.
"Fine," he spoke, sighing as he climbed back up the ladder and took a seat next to Tia.
"When I was at WCKD, I learnt some stuff, and I don't- I don't want you guys going in there without knowing what it is," I started.
Newt must have noticed the sense of panic in my voice, because he came up to me, placed a hand on my shoulder, and gently guided me to sit down on the floor.
"Do you guys remember Sean?" I looked at the Gladers, and watched as recognition flashed in their eyes.
"Who?" Thomas, Brenda, Jorge and Tia said in unison.
"He was someone in the Glade a bit before you arrived, Thomas. He was not good news." A shaky breath left my mouth as I remembered what he did. "I don't really want to get into why, but eventually he was Banished, sent into the Maze to die. The next morning, Minho and I went to retrace his steps, but found him very quickly. He must have died an awful death, since blood was everywhere, and he was all disfigured." I shuddered at the memory.
"What does this have to do with anything, though?" Thomas pressed.
"I'm getting there," I replied. "Anyway, it was obvious he was dead. It was physically impossible for him to be alive. He had been Stung, torn to shreds, it was honestly a disturbing thing to see."
"Yeah, yeah, we can all recall that. It was right at the Maze Entrance, so everyone saw it. Why is this important?" Gally interrupted.
I took a deep breath. "Sean is alive."
"What?!" Newt, Gally and Fry gasped at the same time.
"I don't know how they managed to make him look like that. Maybe it was extremely high quality technology. But they tricked us all."
"Who's 'they'?" Fry asked.
"WCKD. Sean was with WCKD the entire time. He didn't have his memories wiped. He wasn't just another Greenie. I don't know why he was sent up - my guess, it was to spy on us - but now he knows a lot about us. Who we're close to, what we're most likely to do in certain situations, among a lot of other stuff. He's dangerous. He knows more about us than anyone else working for WCKD."
"Oh shit." Fry flopped on the floor, eyes glassy as he realised it was even less likely everyone would come out of this mission alive. "So everything just got a lot more dangerous?"
"Mhm," I confirmed. "Now WCKD know exactly how to lure us into places, what can set us off, things we would sacrifice to get someone close to us back."
"This doesn't make sense, though," Gally argued. "They had cameras. They already had plenty of stuff to find out everything about us. And we were with them for years before we got sent up into the Maze. Why did they need Sean?"
"The cameras didn't pick up everything. Besides, Sean could snoop around, get close with the right people and get them to spill their secrets, you name it." I pause. "Look, at the end of the day, I'm only guessing why WCKD did what they did, but they had a reason, and it definitely won't be anything good. I just wanted you three to know that, so you'll be extra careful."
The room was silent for a beat or two.
"Damn, anymore truth bombs you wanna drop on us?" Fry joked, although it sounded half-hearted; even he had lost his bright smile that he had in the Glade. The world had completely destroyed us all.
"Well, Janson is my dad."
All eyes snap to me. Tia's and Lawrence's expression were fuelled with hatred and anger, Newt's with confusion, Thomas' with hurt, Brenda's, Jorge's and Fry's with sympathy, yet Gally was completely unreadable.
"She's working with the enemy!" Tia yelled, pointing an accusing finger at me.
"What?! No!" I protested. "I didn't know until recently."
"Yeah, Liv would never hurt us," Fry defended.
"You don't know that. You all trusted Teresa, yet she betrayed you." Gally stood up, looking directly at me.
"Gal-"
"Shut up, Olivia," Gally interrupted. "Everything was fine in the Glade until you came up. Then it all went to shit. Maybe you are working with WCKD, but you're just pinning the blame on Sean so no one suspects you. You can't possibly stand here and tell us Sean is somehow alive." His words were like a harsh punch in the gut.
"How could you say that?" I asked. I felt tears forming in my eyes, but I forced myself to stay strong. I was done with being weak, with constantly crying over the smallest inconvenience, and I was especially done with Gally's bullshit.
"I'm just saying what makes sense."
"You know what, Gally? Fuck you." The words didn't come out as harshly as I had intended, but I think he got the point.
"Liv, this doesn't make sense. You had a memory where both your parents were shot dead by WCKD."
"Janson explained it all. My mother took me away as soon as I was born. She found out what Janson was like. That's where she met the guy who WCKD let me believe was my father. She and him had Chuck, and I was never told I wasn't even related to the guy I thought was my dad."
"He could be lying," Gally huffed.
"Nope. DNA test proved it."
"It could have been a false one, where it was made to show that you were related, so then they could get some sort of hold over you."
"I... I guess. But they got it from someone who doesn't work for WCKD, and I was with them the entire time it was done."
"Still could have been tampered with," he shrugged.
"Ok, fine! Maybe I'm not related. I just thought it might be important."
"How?"
"In case you ran into Janson. He could start talking about it to distract you or something... Look, I dunno, Gally! I don't have all the answers. Maybe it will be good for you to know, maybe it won't. Just whatever. Go. Get Minho back." I rolled my eyes and walked out.
A/n: Ok so, I kinda disappeared for another month (oops) but I have a date for when the book will end. I released the first chapter of this book on the 31st of July 2021, so since it's so near that day, I'm going to be releasing the final chapter on the 31st of July 2022, so expect a lot of updates in the next couple days😅I'm not even sure if this is possible because I'm very busy the next few days and will barely have any time to write, but I'll try my best <3
