Sorry this had taken so long.
◆
You looked up hearing the doorbell ringing to your little cafe and bar. The man looked to be a little worse for wear, he wore many layers of state pride t-shirts that it was hard to keep count. You think he also had his state flag on his back like a cape but you wasn't so sure.
But he looked cute to you.
You knew that States existed, sometimes Texas comes in for his usual whiskey and Cali likes his Mimosas.
"Whatcha having sweetheart," you called from the bar.
"Got anything to drown loneliness?" He asked sitting at the bar.
You opened him a bottle of beer. It was a rather slow with the pandemic going around. "Which state are you? I see Texas and Cali in here most of the time."
"Maryland, the misfit."
"How are you the misfit?"
"Northeast states I'm too far South and the South thinks I'm to far North. Midwest thinks I'm too far East. I'm a misfit."
"Oh, know that feeling," you replied. "Family thought I was crazy to go to school just to open a bar, wanted me to become a doctor or a lawyer."
Maryland shrugged. "Seems like we don't belong anywhere."
You chuckled. "Hitting on the bartender, where have I heard that before?"
Maryland chuckled. "Nah hon, if I was hitting on you I would say that I'm crabby, can I come back to your place to hang?"
You laughed at the corny line. "Okay I'll let you slide on that one, Mr. Krabs."
"Spongebob?"
You shrugged. "Watched it when I was a kid." You leaned on the bar and looked to the door. "So does anyone known you left?"
Mary shrugged. "Probably not, everyone's probably arguing amongst themselves to even notice."
"Well hey, I'm free this weekend if you want to hang out, misfits stick together?"
"You asking me out?" Maryland asked. He rubbed the back of his neck, his face heated up from the slight embarrassment.
"No...not in that way...well yes..." you sighed. "Fine I'm asking you out okay? I'm not the world's greatest in smooth pick up lines."
Mary looked at his finished beer. Soon he was four deep and at his limit. He shrugged. "Eh. Why not. Not like I'm doing anything else. Besides you are a cute girl by the way."
You blushed at his comment. "You are definitely tipsy now."
He went to stand up but stumbled a bit. "Well shit," he said.
"You okay?"
"Yeah hon, I'm just not a huge drinker."
"Did you drive here?"
"Nah, I walked." Mary sat back down from the pounding in his head.
You went to grab your keys till you heard a truck pulling in. You recognized it at Texas's. His was definitely a diesel.
"Hey Y/n," Texas said walking in with DC. "Told you she'd find our missing Mary."
"Come on Mary, your a mess," DC said taking him by the arm.
"Why not? None of you treat me like I matter?" Maryland snapped.
"You're drunk and it's time to go home," DC said. "Everyone's out looking for you."
"Nah, you just now noticing something."
You patted Maryland's shoulder. "Mary, you are drunk, it's time to go home and sleep it off."
Mary groaned. "You take me home, I'm not going with those bastards."
You nodded. "Alright, but Texas is going to help you into my car while I'm getting my keys and locking up the bar."
He nodded and let Texas help him up.
"Come on you damn drunkie," Texas joked putting his arm over his shoulder.
Once you locked up the bar, you walked out with DC.
"Thank you for keeping him here," DC said.
"No problem, when he said he was a state and that he walked here, I figured one of you would come looking," you said. "Besides Texas comes here most of the time."
"You do got the best whiskey," Texas said tipping his hat.
You opened up the driver side door. "Now I don't know where you guys live..."
"You can follow me," Texas said. "It's not that far."
You nodded and got in your car, starting it up you looked over to Maryland. "Your gonna be okay," you said to him.
You followed Texas out of the parking lot and onto the highway.
Mary scoffed. "Oh so now I'm important to them? How did they even find me?"
"You went to a bar, my bar where Texas and Cali comes every weekend to drink."
Mary looked out the window. "I'm still a misfit."
The car ride was quiet as he eventually fell asleep.
You pulled into the driveway of the Statehouse. It was fairly nice for a house.
Large and practically a mansion, of course, because there about 50 people or so living in one house.
Texas and another state, you assumed Oklahoma by the hat, got Maryland into the house and up into his room.
You pulled DC to the side. "He showed up at the bar thinking he's a misfit, that no one really cares for him."
"Yeah I got that, what do you want to do about it?"
"Well," you said writing your name and number down on a piece of paper. "I was thinking that if someone actually took some time to hang out with him, he wouldn't feel alone."
DC nodded and took your number. "Alright, I'll give it to him."
"Thanks."
You nodded and walked back to your car.
"Hey Y/n," DC called.
"Yeah?" You asked opening the door.
"How did you know he felt like that?"
"Misfits seem to attract to each other," you said getting in and starting your car up.
You looked back seeing DC walking into the house, you then pulled out and drove home.
Your mind on Maryland the whole time.
