chapter thirty-three, take care of her.

WHEN RICK AND MICHONNE first arrived at the Hilltop, they were immediately told of what happened to their daughter. She had gotten drunk and passed out. Her side was infected from the stab wound she decided was not of import. It was. It certainly was.

Both had rushed to the infirmary trailer to find the girl awake. She wore a sheepish expression, one full of guilt. She was still pale and very sore.

"Des," Rick had collapsed in the seat beside her bed. He grabbed her hands in his own. "Don't pull that again."

"I won't," she said quietly, "I'm sorry, Dad."

He reached up and brushed her sweaty hair away from her face. "I'm not mad." Rick told her. "I love you, Dessa."

"I love you, too, Dad."

And now—

"I don't know what the hell it is." Rosita Espinosa says as she gets out of the vehicle.

Cori stands beside Enid, her arms crossed over her chest. Enid steps up and opens the back of the SUV, examining the empty crates.

Rosita hands a piece of paper out for Maggie to take. The woman does and begins to read off that it says. "'If you fill the crates with food or phonograph records, I will gladly exchange them for a key to your future'?"

"It lists coordinates for our meeting spot." Rosita tells them. Cori's red brows dip in as Michonne takes the note from Maggie.

"What the hell?" Cori voices everyone's thoughts as she looks down at the note.

"This isn't the Saviors." Michonne speaks up. Cori glances up at her. "They'd blow through the gates, make a big show. This isn't that."

"I wouldn't put nothin' past 'em." Maggie says.

"Well, if it is a trap, it's kind of obvious." Rosita informs them.

"Which is what could make it a trap." Maggie says.

"What if... what if it's someone who actually wants to help?" Cori asks, looking to Maggie for advice. "Someone one doesn't want to hurt us?"

"If someone is trying to help us and we miss out, we miss out. If somebody's tryin' to kill us, we die." Maggie replies.

"Not if we're careful." Michonne says, agreeing with Cori quickly.

"Being careful is staying here," Enid pipes.

"I'll go. I'll see what's up." Michonne steps up.

"Me, too," Cori immediately agrees.

"Yow two go, I go." Rosita steps in.

"Rick wants us here." Enid looks to Michonne and Cori, "if Odessa finds out y'all are leaving..."

"She'll just be upset she misses out on the bloodshed," Cori looks to the younger girl.
