Material things don't have a gender. Clothes, accessories, even makeup; they're all things that were made to be worn. They were not made specifically for a gender. Just because a man likes to wear bright, frilly clothes and do up his makeup does not mean he is a transgender, it does not make him a woman. It makes him a person. It makes him, him. And though society doesn't see it that way, Kellin understood. Kellin knew that his love for all things pretty and sparkly was not something he should be ashamed of, it was something he should be proud of.
But it was still his own little secret.
The warm sun shone down on Kellin's back as he stood in front of the dorm building entry of his college, his bags in hand, and anxiety in his stomach. He stared up at the big building, full of a bunch of kids Kellin would have to communicate with at some point. He was nervous, to say the least.
San Diego was very different from his hometown, there were so many people, so many intimidating people. Sweet, innocent, fragile Kellin didn't know what he was thinking when he packed up and moved down here for college, but all he wanted to do was get away.
He started to walk forward when someone gave him a rough shove and he stumbled over, falling to the ground with a grunt of pain.
"Move, dumbass!" a harsh voice snapped, but Kellin was too afraid to look, too scared to do anything but lay there and cower. He listened to the footsteps moving away from him and he peeked around before scrambling to his feet, gathering his bags and moving quickly as he went inside.
Kellin glanced around, taking in the blue walls with lame inspirational posters and murals, the busy bodies buzzing around him; this was his new home for a while. He kept his head down as he went to the stairs, avoiding the elevator so he didn't need to sit in an awkward silence with strangers.
He sped up to the second floor, where his room was. 102.
When he burst into the room, he hoped to feel relief, relief from his anxiety because he'd be alone. However, his anxiety did nothing but rise as he looked at the figure that stood in the middle of the room.
It was a boy, a young man, with an athletic bag in his hand and his phone held in front of him, his thumb tapping away at the screen. He was short, about as short as Kellin himself, and he had long, curly brown hair that was partially hidden by a flat brim hat atop his head, twisted backwards. His skin was tan, and Kellin would have analyzed him more if his gaze didn't move from his phone screen, to Kellin.
"Uh, who are you?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. Kellin's entire body froze and his throat tightened. He glanced around anxiously and opened and closed his mouth multiple times, unable to form words.
He scolded himself, trying to make himself calm down; 'Breathe, Kellin!' he told himself, but when he looked back to the boy in front of him, he simply couldn't calm himself down enough to speak.
"Whoa whoa, hey, calm down man, I'm not gonna hurt you," the boy said, setting his things down and holding his hands out to Kellin in a defensive manner, trying to soothe him. "Come in, close the door, okay? You're fine."
