"What's the matter Robin?"
"Stop calling me that." He says through his teeth.
"Why? That's your name."
"No my name is John. John Blake. Not Robin."
"I like Robin better." I smile.
"Well as of right now I don't care what you like." He crosses his arms.
"I don't get why you are so mad! I do what I have to do to survive."
"By stealing? Hailey you're a criminal!"
"It wasn't even a lot of money. It was only a couple hundred. Those people have more than enough."
"You could go to jail again!"
"Then I'll just escape again. Look I know you're worried but I'm fine. You don't know what it's like out there. Every alley, every corner, it's full of crime. This place isn't good. It's dangerous out there." I sit down on the window ledge next to the fire escape hugging my knees.
"Then go into a system. It's safer there."
"Have you seen the girls home? It's awful. There are bad people there Rob. Besides I'd be stuck there. At least out there I can explore."
"Yeah explore into people's pockets." He mumbles. I get up.
"What's wrong with you? What do you want me starve out there? What else am I suppose to do? Stay here? In this little room forever? Is that what you want? Rob I couldn't do that."
"Fine I have tried to help you time and time again, but I've had it. Go and live your life of crime with the rest of the trash out there." He shuts his mouth instantly. I can feel tears form at the brims of my eyes. Trash? I open the window letting the cold air come into our secret room that we have met in for years and climb onto the fire escape.
"Hailey wait. I didn't mean it. I ju-"
"Really trash? Is that how you see me? A piece of garbage you just thought you'd pity for a few years. Well guess what I relieve you of your duty. You won't ever have to see me again. Goodbye, John." I jump down landing on the snowing pavement a floor below. It's freezing out here.
"Fine leave! Why would I want to associate with a criminal?" I hear the window slam shut and I run down the icy alleyway. I only have one places go to when I can't go see him. A little abandoned apartment building. The door is always chained shut so no one can get in. Which is good for me seeing as nobody will try to bother me in there. I run around to the back and climb the window ledges till I get to the fifth floor and open the window to my place. I slip inside closing it behind me and make a small fire in the fireplace warming myself up.
I've never fought with him before. Not like that. I let the tears fall and curl into a little ball. Trash? We have been best friends for years and that's what he calls me? Trash? That's the meanest thing anyone has ever said to me in my sixteen years of life. And I've met bad people. I hope I never see him again. I don't think I'd be able to handle it
