Never Say Goodbye

As Claire went into the bus on Sunday afternoon, she took out her phone so she could listen to music. Once she was down the mountain and in an area where she had service, she received a few messages from her parents, and some friends. She had replied to her parents saying she would be at the school around 2:30 to 3:00 pm she replied to her friends saying "Hey whats up sorry for lagging theres no signal at the campsite"(there literally wasn't). As soon as she had sent every message, she closed her eyes to take a small nap, 30 minutes later her phone rang, it was a message, from Kenneth. "Hey, Claire!" She smiled at her phone, she felt like an idiot doing it, but she then replied "hey whats up?"
"Not much and you?" "Same just heading back home from my camping trip, its a Sunday afternoon and I'll probably just stay home watching movies." "Nice! Sounds like fun!"
Without thinking it through she had mentioned that he was welcome to come over but he had passed. She replied with an okay and from there on he never said anything else.
She didn't realize that when she sent the message her could have gotten the wrong impression but that's not what she meant. Claire didn't want to reply back so she just left it as it was.
Kenneth and Claire were so distant in the beginning since they became friends again; a hello and goodbye here and there, a walk home, a nice conversation by text once in a while. She wished that nothing had changed with them, she wish her and Kenneth would still be close but not as close as they were.
One day Claire was with her friends and saw Kenneth with the same girl she would always see him with. She asked around who she was and she got the same response "oh that's his girlfriend."
Her heart broke. Shattered into millions of pieces. Claire didn't know what to think, he said he wanted to take things slow, he had barely met her. Claire was pissed but she didn't want to say anything to Kenneth because she had just gotten him back so she let it go, and let the day go by. She never liked the girl Kenneth was with ever since she found out, but what choice did she have Kenneth was her friend.
Claire then realized that summer was coming up and she had to leave everyone behind for a while. She was leaving her friends, Kenneth and ms. Juárez. Life couldn't get any better, until Zully told her that all of city year was leaving a day before the last day of school.
She had become so close to City Year she didn't want them to leave at all Zully was her sister, what would she do without her! Zully knew about her cutting, she had kept her happy enough not do it. So then they decided to keep a journal between themselves, and from this day on they have. Although it's been forever since Claire has seen her.
Once Zully had gone, she started getting to Know Kenneth more and hung out with him while his girlfriend was at volleyball practice. They hung out for a bit sometimes until the end of that school year.
After summer they would enter 11th grade. Claire just kept getting distracted by each time she realized that she wouldn't be able to spend time with Ms. Juárez, leaving her, she knew she wouldn't be able to really handle it. Ms. Juárez was like a mother to her, she would even call her mom and sometimes without her knowing. It was like a secret.
The last day of school she did everything she could do to remember every little moment that she would go through before leaving off into the summer.
During the summer Claire went to Universal Studios more than she could count. She honestly just didn't know what else to do. She went to church a couple of weekends and she would go to her dads house as well.
Before she knew it summer was over.
Junior year was here, was here and she was willing to do everything she could to make the last two years count in her life. Then the moment she saw Kenneth, she knew who she was going to spend it with. He came up to her, with news.
"I know what I'm gonna do with my life." He said, "what?" She said with a smile on her face. "I'm joining the army." That smile that was on her face was suddenly gone. "What?! Why?!"
"Because, instead of dying here, because I know I will, doing nothing. I'd rather be out there, doing something I love and die." "Kenneth! That doesn't make any sense! You'd never die here doing nothing!"
"My choice is made Claire."
"But---"
"Don't worry you still got me here until we graduate." He hugged her and walked away. She didn't know what to do, what to think so she just went on her regular school day.
The bell schedule was different she had most of the same teachers, and some she didn't know.
Most of the classes boring except her 6th period, she met a couple new people Francisco, Andrea, Daniel and Guillermo. Some crazy, but fun people that make her laugh her ass off. Every moment she went to that period she felt like she was there for hours! Her second favorite class was Journalism, she would take pictures and write stories, two of her favorite things.
Claire had an amazing time and it couldn't get any better. Wait change that, football season was coming up and Claire had the amazing privilege to sing the National Anthem at every game! Every single Friday night she was the proudest sentinel there could be, no matter how many games the guys lost.
There was one day where Claire was writing a poem unto the computer a poem about Zully, trying to tell her how she really couldn't handle anything at the moment. Suddenly, ms. Bush had pushed up her anxiety by telling her that she needed to get her quotes in for her story. At the moment it was time to leave Claire got up slammed the seat in the table, ran upstairs and at that same moment, Raquel had asked her for her charger which Claire had at her home, and then Claire had screamed right in her face leaving Raquel in shock. After that she stood right outside of ms. Juárez's debating whether she should go inside or not, but instead she ran away to look for Kenneth. Her friends Diana and Monica had asked her what was wrong but she ran too fast to even hear them. She went crazy looking for Kenneth but he was no where to be found. After a couple of minutes everyone had gone crazy calling her cell. She had missed two calls from Monica, but instead of calling back she walked to Juárez's room.
Once she got there, there was a student telling her everything, she walked in and the student went outside then ms. Juarez's asked her what was wrong and Claire had just started crying again. She told her everything that had happened and Juárez had told her to stay calm and to relax. Ms. Kim the MultiMedia counselor had come inside the room already knowing what had happened, Claire, ms. Juárez and ms. Kim had stayed outside talking, then mr. Montes the choir director had came upstairs --which was a surprise because he always leaves right after school-- and had asked what's wrong. Claire didn't really want to so ms. Juárez had told him "she's stuck between the 'what ifs' in life, then all you hear is the elevator door open, with ms. Bush stepping out. "Claire I heard what happened are you okay?! Was this my fault?" Claire lied and shook her head. After a while of talking, they had left, Claire hugged ms. Juárez for the hundredth time and realized that she was her shoulder to cry on, her guardian angel!
