Your eyes glazed over as you continued to stare at your computer screen, hoping that if you stared long enough the leads would magically appear. You thought about Connor last night, cursing yourself for probably giving him an identity crisis in your stupor.
Your ears perked up at a commotion beginning in the break room, but you decided it wasn't worth exerting the energy to move your head. Hurried steps behind you were enough to swivel in your chair, enough to see Gavin jogging towards you. You narrowed your eyes before your expression morphed into one of worry as you took in the look on Gavin's face.
"Sweetheart, you gotta come look at this," he panted, throwing a thumb over his shoulder. "Shit hit the fan."
You furrowed your brows as your eyes followed Gavin's motion to the break room where everyone began to crowd in front of the TVs.
"Shit," you hissed, jumping up from your desk and following Gavin's hurried steps back to the break room. This meant it had something to do with androids. Something bad.
You pushed your way through the crowd forming, Gavin at your heels, silencing everyone's protests with a glare. An android with his skin peeled back was speaking directly to the television screen.
"Shit," you repeated, and Gavin nodded in agreement beside you.
The android started listing his demands, his voice steady, "We demand that humans recognize androids as a living species and each android as a person in their own right." Is an android even a person? Your mind drifted to Connor. You felt silly for even questioning it. A machine would have left you last night. A machine would've killed those Traci's. Connor was not a machine.
The android continued, "We demand that all crimes against androids be punished in the same way as crimes against humans." Fair, you thought. Murder was murder, no matter who or what was murdered. You'd seen the atrocious acts humans have committed against androids. Your stomach rolled just thinking about it.
"Together, we can live in peace and build a better future for humans and androids," the android concluded. Together. That was a nice thought. The side of your mouth quirked up, you and Connor could be together.
A hand gripped your shoulder and your muscles tensed, torn out of your fantasy. "Let's go, we can ride together," Gavin suggested, his head motioning toward the door.
You nodded before your brain could even register what you were signing yourself up for. Oh god, a car ride with Gavin. You ran to grab your coat before jogging to catch up with Gavin who was already halfway to the door.
"Thanks for the ride," you mumbled, attempting to match Gavin's hurried pace. He opened the driver's side door and jumped in, ignoring you. You rolled your eyes before yanking the passenger door open and climbing inside.
It was silent for a while, and Gavin's reckless driving is the only thing to distract you from whatever was going on at Stratford Tower. You grip the sides of your seat, refraining from pressing your foot to the floorboards when Gavin doesn't break as soon as he should. Suddenly, you're reminded why you don't ride in the car with him. Well, one of the reasons why you don't ride with him anymore.
"Can you believe this shit?" Gavin asks, looking over at you. You meet his eyes briefly; he's scowling and gripping the steering wheel tighter than usual.
"It was going to happen eventually," you sigh. It's quiet for a moment before you speak up, "What do you think we're walking into?"
Before Gavin could respond, a car in front of him slammed on its brakes. "Shit!" Gavin muttered as he flung his arm out over your chest as he braked.
