"You alright?" he asked, looking over at you while he pulled his arm away. Your heart is racing but you nod, sending him a small smile. It was easy to fall into this routine with Gavin: he'd do something sweet, you'd feel all gooey inside, then one of you would say something that would set the other one off, you'd fight, and the cycle would begin anew. You continued the rest of the ride in silence.
***
Gavin parked somewhat roughly in front of the Stratford Tower, and you both exited his car, fighting to get through the crowd of people forming. You stuck close to Gavin, using him to clear the way for you. The crowd becomes restless, and someone shoves you. You're pushed forward and you grip the back of Gavin's jacket to prevent yourself from falling.
"Y'Alright back there, Sweetheart?" Gavin called, a grin forming on his face.
You rolled your eyes, "Just peachy."
Finally, you both exit the crowd and meet Chris at the entrance.
"Chris, what the hell?" Gavin voiced, motioning to the poorly contained crowd.
Chris sighed, "We're doing our best, Detective."
"Whatever," Gavin rubbed his brow, "Just show us where we need to go." Chris nodded and led you through the luxurious courtyard and up the escalator to the main lobby.
"They had androids at the front desk," you remark as you and Gavin head to the elevator. Chris handed you a data pad and headed back to the front of the tower to try to control the crowd. Gavin punched the button to the elevator, and you waited. The elevator arrived with a 'ding' and you both ventured inside.
"I'm sorry for what happened the other night," your apology was toppling out of your mouth before you could stop it, "I promised you that I wouldn't do anything like that and I-"
Gavin called your name; he rarely ever called you by your name. "It's okay," he muttered, briefly meeting your eyes before looking away. "I wanted it as much as you did."
"I wasn't being fair," you were stepping closer to him, silently begging him to look at you.
He whispered your name this time, grabbing you by the shoulders, "You know it never works out between us." His voice was pained, and you felt your throat tighten.
"I know," you said softly, grabbing his hands from your shoulders and pushing them downwards so they were interlinked. You leaned in, wanting to be close to him just one more time and-
Ding!
You jumped back from Gavin as the doors of the elevator shot open. Your eyes met for a brief second before you tore your gaze away. You cleared your throat, cheeks flushed, and your heart racing. You left the elevator not waiting for Gavin to follow.
You and Gavin took your time investigating the crime scene, always on opposite sides of the room.
Eventually, you make your way back to the main hallway, tapping away on your data pad while attempting to avoid Gavin's ever-present gaze. The elevator opened and you lifted your head, wondering who could be showing up so late.
"Hi, Hank," Chris greeted, looking up from his tablet.
"Look who finally decided to show up," you announced, a smirk plastered on your face. You felt your heart skip a beat, you were eager to see Connor again. Why were you acting like this? Get it together, you mentally scolded yourself.
"Hi, doc," Hank greeted. "Shit," Hank breathed as he took in the scene before him, "what's going on here? There was a party, and nobody told me about it?"
