The Courtyard

A crash disturbed the eerie quiet of the library. You pulled a book off the shelves too forcefully, and the books around it tumbled to the floor, the sound of it resonating through the grand space. You swore quietly as one of the books landed on your foot.

You froze a second later, as Figure's heavy footsteps began getting louder. It was coming towards you. You turned and ran, not even bothering to try and be quiet. You had to get out of here, you had to escape-

A closet. You didn't hesitate, opening the doors and hiding inside. You could hear it outside of the doors, listening for you. Light shone from its mouth through the crack in the doors with every quiet roar. You held your breath.

Please leave please leavepleaseleave-

After a moment it stomped away. You let out a sigh of relief. Your heart was pounding so hard you thought Figure would surely have heard it. That was far too close.

You stayed in the closet a moment longer, not wanting to risk another encounter. Figure was so fast- had it been this fast when you first entered the library?

You cautiously made your way back to the pile of books you had knocked over. For a second, you thought you saw an eye watching you from the corner of your eye, and you jumped. There was nothing there when you turned around. This place was messing with you, making you paranoid. Making you see things. There was nothing there.

Keep going.

You could see the book you needed buried under the others. Carefully lifting the other books and placing them silently back on the shelf, you snatched it and hurriedly snuck away.

It was a diamond. You risked your life and it wasn't even part of the code.

Ugh.

You turned to walk away, then stopped. You could hear the sparkling noise again. There was a book nearby. You hugged the walls of the bookshelves as you crept towards the sound.

Triangle. You just needed one more book, but you could hear the Figure's enraged screams echoing through the room.

Screw this. Maybe I can guess the last digit. You needed to get out of here.

When Figure was as far away from you as possible, you ran for the stairs. Thankfully, it was far away enough that it couldn't hear you. You cowered in the corner by the lock, piecing together what you knew of the code.

95320. You put the code into the lock, sighing in frustration when it didn't work. It was okay, you told yourself with shaking hands. You were almost out of here.

95321.

95322.

95323.

95324- the padlock clicked and without hesitation, you ran through the heavy doors, breathing heavily as you heard them slam shut behind you. Figure let out a scream of anger. Your heart was pounding so badly you had to lean against the wall for a moment, scared it would burst. You made it.

"I'm never doing that again," you breathed. Now that you were calmer, you decided to take the time to glance around your surroundings. The carpet was worn and faded, and the lights were dim, just like any other room in this wretched hotel. It was just another room.

You did all that for nothing.

You swore loudly, standing up from the wall. Dammit, of course that wouldn't be the exit. Of course you would be stuck here in this hellscape for even longer. You couldn't dwell on your feelings, though. Just keep going.

Pulling open a drawer, you spotted a small jar of pills. The faded label read Vitamins. The white pills inside were probably useless by now, you realized.

Whatever. You didn't care anymore. As long as you got out of here, you'd be happy.

The pills didn't fit in your pocket, so you held them in your non-dominant hand. You sighed and opened the next door.

Door 51. Great.

How many doors were there, anyway?

Just keep going. The next few doors were uneventful, except for the distant screaming of the Figure. Those sounds still sent a shiver down your spine.

On Door 62, the lights flickered again. You paused for a moment outside one of the wardrobes, waiting for the scream and the shattering of glass that you knew would come. The second you heard glass shattering, you threw yourself into the closet. The icy cold wind that blew through the room after the dark, shadowy creature had passed scared you. You already could hear whispers telling you to leave- why had they come so fast?

You pressed on, making your way over broken glass. In the next room, the path to the door was blocked by a wall of furniture, forcing you through a pair of double doors. There was a lighter inside the top of the desk in that room, which you took in case your flashlight happened to run out of power. Better safe than sorry, you know?

You kept going.

You pushed open a door labeled 75, and were greeted by an iron gate. It creaked open, and you stepped out into a rainy courtyard. The path across it was covered so the cobblestones would stay dry, and it was lit more brightly than the rest of the hotel. The grass was soft, and you would have laid down in it if not for the rain. The grassy square was surrounded by walls, with lit windows shining warmly down at you. On one side of the courtyard, there was a statue. It was the tall figure of an angel, plunging a sword into the marble pedestal. Shining in the light from the windows reflection off of the eternal rain, it promised safety, telling you that here at least, you would be okay.

You wished you could stay longer, listening to the rhythmic drumming of the rain against the roof of the pathway, but you had to go. As you opened the rusted metal gate on the other side of the courtyard, you took one final look back at the vibrant green garden.

A pitch black eye stared back at you from the opposite wall.
