The thing about the late hours of October nights in the trailer park or - early mornings.. depending on who you were was the dense fog that would fill the park and surrounding area.
It made everything around you hazy and any light source there was had a muffled glow. No matter how much you tried to look through the fog, you could never really look past it.
It was as if nothing existed beyond Eddie's trailers porch, like if you stepped off of it you'd fall into a cloud of nothingness.
To some that may be unsettling, to you.. not so much. It was comforting in the strangest of ways.. knowing autumn was upon you.
That the leaves were turning rusty orange, golden brown and various shades of red.
That the nights became longer and the mornings shorter.
That cool breeze that swept over Hawkins which held you in a tight embrace that felt so cozy and so safe.
The smell of the moisture on the trees in the surrounding forest, of the dirt after a fresh rainstorm.. of the leaves as they slowly wither away.
Hm, yes.. Autumn. Beautiful, beautiful autumn. You muse to yourself.
The trailer door creaks open, pulling you from your thoughts and the warm coffee you continuously sip on from a mug you've claimed as your own.
"Y/N?" Eddie lets out a soft yawn, a blanket wrapped around him tightly to conceal his barely clothed body and to preserve any body heat he can in the cold of night.
"Hmm?" You raise your head from your previously fixed gaze on the fog, taking in the state of Eddie's bed head and sleepy brown eyes.
"What are you doing out here? It's-," he pauses, fiddling with the blanket to look at his watch "Four am," his eyes widen to look at the time, eyes still unfocused from sleep.
"It's autumn," you muse with a smile, taking another sip from your mug then placing it on the small table beside the couch on the porch.
"Autumn," Eddie laughs tiredly, "it will be here all month, all today." He makes his way over to you as you lean against one of the porches posts
"Not like this," you shake your head, arms crossed over your chest as you feel a shiver run down your spine.
The sweater and sweatpants you're dressed in only doing so much to shield you from the cold breeze.
"Is that so?" Eddie's tired voice drawls, opening up the blanket that's draped around him to pull you into his arms so you're both covered by an extra layer of warmth.
Though the heat radiating from Eddie's body was enough to make your own temperature rise.
Your eyes close for a moment, a sweet smile upon your lips as Eddie seats left and right with his arms lovingly wrapped around you.
"It's our first autumn," you say in fact.
"Mhmm," his voice is an octave deeper as his lips press into the crook of your neck.Well your first autumn as a couple, that is. You've spent many autumns together as friends and almost lovers.
This was different for obvious reasons but it was something in this night specifically that really felt like a new chapter in a book doused in nostalgia.
You were nostalgic for this moment you were already existing in, that you were living in that very moment.
As you knew once this moment passed, it would continue to live on in your mind forever.
It was the nostalgia before the nostalgia.
Or maybe the nostalgia for the nostalgia."Come back inside, come to bed." He murmurs against your skin "We have school in the morning," he yawns again.
Though you do love autumn and this moment.. you love Eddie more.
You nod as you let out a yawn of your own, "Do I get cuddles?" You smirk up to him "Only always," he chuckles in fact - releasing you from his arms and the blanket that was wrapped around you two.
You collect your mug from the table and follow behind Eddie into the trailer, pouring the few sips left of coffee down the drain and setting the mug in the sink.
Turning around to look at him, a soft smile curls up on your face "It's about to storm," your smile grows wider "No it's.." Eddie starts with dark knitted brows.
The low rumbling of thunder fills the trailer as a streak of lightning makes its way through the blinds - the roaring of the downpour on the roof tells you, you were right.
"Okay, maybe it is." He laughs.
Extending his hand for you as you take it with out thought, the two of you trailing into his bedroom which you seem to spend more nights in than your own
The wind howled outside of his bedroom window, the room lit up in brief intervals from the distant lightning strikes.
Yes. Autumn.
Eddie flops down onto his bed, closest to the door as he pulls you down along side him so you're in your claimed spot near the wall.
Repositioning the blanket so it's draped over the both of you, he lays on his back as you snuggle up into his side.
Head resting on his chest, leg covering his lower half.. fingertips searching for his own as your hands lace together seamlessly.
This is happiness.
Eddie wiggles around for a moment to achieve maximum comfort, his lips brushing against the crown of your head as he places a feather like kiss upon it.
"You're so warm," you say sleepily, an indescribable comfort washing over you as you snuggle into him even more.
His free hand wraps around your back, fingers dancing through your hair. It always lulled you to sleep. Always.
"Was saving it all for you," he smiles down to you with half open eyes "Such a romantic," you tease in a whisper as your lips tangle with his own.
So soft, so lazy.. so sleepy.
Brushing your nose against his own, you give one last butterfly kiss against his lips.. knowing you can't fight off sleep much longer.
"I love you," Eddie breathes out, his thumb creating small circles on the back of your hand that's intertwined with his. "I love you," you smile softly, happily.
Just like it always did, the rhythmic sound of Eddie's heart beat and his fingers brushing through your hair soothe you to sleep.
Autumn can wait until morning.
