It's Time to Say Goodbye

The sound of a loud thump and Talon screaming greeted the morning and I guessed who was dead. Aurora shot up in her bed and fell to the ground in shock.

I was slightly concerned about that, since if she had broken her neck or something from that fall, that wouldn't be good for me. Luckily she immediately bounced back up with an 'I'm alright!' and I rolled my eyes.

Without a second glance, I got up and walked out, not even bothering to change out of the shirt and shorts that I had slept in. I just threw on the boots and walked out.

Evidently, no one could have possibly still been sleeping. A crowd had gathered around Talon and Commander Reid's quarters, while only Felix and Kris were absent. Everyone had bedhead or was still in their sleepwear or both. Archer saw me and Aurora and stepped aside, giving us a clear line of sight into the room.

Talon was in the corner, shaking, and Commander Reid's body was on the floor, his neck twisted in an unnatural position and blood staining the front of his shirt and his skin. Theo and Ren were trying to get Talon out of the room, but he wasn't moving.

I heard the pounding sound of footsteps from behind me and Archer tried to push Kris away. Felix locked eyes with me and I could swear he was smirking inside.

Apparently you should never stop a determined human from reaching their goal. Kris pushed through and probably immediately regretted her decision to do that. She backed away, eyes widened and her head shaking, as if she couldn't believe what was in front of her eyes.

Unfortunately, I could see where Felix had been going with that strategy to target Commander Reid. Now, with no clear chain of command, the entire crew might descend into chaos, or he might want to take control himself. Or, if someone else took control, they would be totally inexperienced and wouldn't work well with the tasks that a leader had to do.

I watched Felix closely as he wrapped a comforting arm around Kris and his expression hardened. "Talon. You killed Commander Reid?"

Talon slowly looked up at Felix, then glanced around to the rest of us. "He was dead when I... when I woke up."

"And how would that have happened?" Felix demanded.

"I-" Talon started, then shuddered. "I don't know. I went to sleep around nine-ish, and Commander Reid was fine. I woke up and..."

I could see the skepticism on the faces around me. The team that was sent to infiltrate a crew to do something like this was trained to make sure that the roommate was fast asleep before striking. It honestly was more like two kills, since the crew ended up accusing the roommate for the murder, so if that was anything to work off of...

Although whatever kills were made through ejection didn't count for any contestant. They just eliminated another target for the opposing shapeshifter.

Talon noticed the looks on their faces and his expression became even more desperate. "Please! I'm not lying! I didn't kill Commander Reid!"

Ren put a hand on Talon's shoulder and glanced at us. Evidently she noticed where everyone's thoughts were going. "Theo and I can testify for Talon. He would never kill anyone."

"If he was replaced by an Impostor, it wouldn't matter," Zan said. She took a step forward and the trio flinched.

"Do you really think that we wouldn't know when our own partner was replaced by an Impostor?!" Theo demanded. "Because Talon's the same Talon that applied to MIRA with us, that shared our cooking failures, that we graduated high school with!"

"Impostors are really good at tricking you," Felix said smoothly. "For all we know, the real Talon is dead and this is an Impostor."

Talon's gaze landed on me and I could recognize the look in his eyes. It was the same one that many shapeshifters had when they realized that they were about to die. "Come on, guys! I swear I didn't... please..."
