the vampire diaries fanfic writing tips

kol mikaelson is one of my fav characters to write as a love interest.

why?

because his love interest basically becomes his entire personality. it's cute. i love it. and i can do what i want with it.

so first we have to address the elephant in the room.

his line about falling for mortals as a sign of weakness...

then he proceeds to fall in love with a mortal. like right after he's resurrected. she didn't even say anything. he was just in love.

so let's take it back a bit.

kol's character is unloved and unwanted and excluded by his family. he acted the way he acted because he wanted attention.

so is it possible that line isn't true?

most likely the writers just forgot about it.

but since you're writing a fanfic that's focusing on kol as a love interest, your readers won't.

here's a few ways you could explain it:

kol was afraid to love because he didn't want to give his family anything to hold over him. a mortal can be easily killed. if kol loved someone, it's possible that klaus could kill them to try and control kol so he just stays away because he doesn't want to fall in love and then lose someone.

another possibility is that because he had this reputation for being bad, even by his own family, he believed that's what he was and that no one would love him so he acted like he didn't want to fall in love.

he could also have fallen in love with mortals before but they all died or left and then he turns away from it.

or you could just go with yeah he stood by what he said but then he met this mortal and well, he's in love.

i don't think he's the type to fall in love with just anyone. i think he needs to have a meaningful interaction. how this interaction goes is up to you and how your oc is written. but i don't think he'd give someone a chance just because they ask him out, he would have to be interested. and he'd know he's interested. he might try to deny it, but he'd know it.

i think he would fall first and probably fall the hardest. again that depends on the oc, but he just seems like he falls in love pretty hard.

i think he's the type to start off as friends, even with some playful flirting, i doubt he'd go right into a relationship, but that's just a personal opinion that i have and can't really justify. i just thought i'd include it because there's not much about him in the show.

but i think when he decides to take a relationship further depends on something. what your oc is.

if your oc isn't a vampire, werewolf, or witch, especially if they don't know about the supernatural, i think he'd be a little hesitant and want to protect them. he knows he isn't the best at control, and he wouldn't want them to get hurt.

he was fine with davina, but the second he felt an indication that he couldn't control himself, he left and tried to stay away. davina was a witch so she could protect herself, but if she couldn't, i think it would've meant a serious problem in their relationship given how quick he was to leave. and yes he was cursed, but they didn't know that right away.
