"Do I need one?" She looked up to see your face, "I just wanted to talk about adoption."
Ms. Hattie turned her attention towards you, "Oh, alright then, what can I do for you?" She put on a forced smile as you started acting.
"Well, I'm looking for three girls, preferably related to each other. My house gets so lonely sometimes and I've got lots of free time. I stopped looking for a partner a long time ago. You know how women can be, one minute they want you, then the next minute they want a man with three sports cars." Hattie's face turned bright red.
"W-well, I'll just have you fill out these papers-" your phone went off.
Checking the caller ID, you sighed, "Anita, call him outside and tell him I'll inform him on the way, alright?"
She nodded walking out as you finished the forms, handing them to her, "Thank you... Ms. Y/n. So..."
"Just Y/n, please." You cut her off as she started scrolling.
She checked the database, "we do have a pair of girls, but they were just returned, so I'm not sure-"
"Ms. Hattie, I'm sure they're wonderful, if the parents returned them then they just couldn't handle being a parent." You didn't break character, even when you thought of Gru returning the girls.
She gave you the portfolios to look through, and you accepted them, barely touching her hands, "You have gorgeous eyes."
You smiled looking through the folders, "Oh, my, thank you..."
Hattie was now considering her sexuality as you skimmed through to make sure they were your girls, "This looks perfect, honestly if it was possible, I'd want to adopt them now."
She looked at your eyes then to the computer and faked typing to try and get a hold of herself, "I'm sure the girls would love to have you as their parent, just sign these forms for the girls and we'll have you on your way."
Hattie looked up your name to find many things pop up, you were an actress in your younger years, you're a model and own multiple companies, and you're single. A billionaire sitting in front of her desk just complimented her eyes. Hattie looked at you as you finished signing the papers.
"All right, everything looks in order here... Please send Margo, Edith, and Agnes to the main hall please." Hattie said into the speaker.
It was maybe ten or twenty minutes until the girls came out, looking upset, "Girls this is Ms. Y/n, I know things didn't work out with Mr. Gru, but I'm sure you'd love to live with a businesswoman like her." She said looking at the girls as you winked at them.
Agnes ran to you and you picked her up, "I missed you," she whispered.
"I missed you too." You whispered back as the girls picked up their suitcases, "Here, let me help."
You picked up one case with Agnes still in your arms, "Thank you so much, Ms. Hattie, let's go girls."
-.-
When you got home Anita checked the girls to see if anything had happened to them, "She put you in a box?"
Anita has a PhD in Psychology, something she did in her spare time since she was bored. Somehow she got the girls to talk a little about their unknown trauma. You knew about their mother, and why they were at Hattie's, but there is still so much to uncover and help cope.
"It's a punishment, if we do bad or get returned, we get put in the box of shame for a few days." Edith put her suitcase on the bed, explaining to Anita as she fixed Agnes's ponytail.
"Does she feed you while you're in the box?" Anita questioned pinching her cheeks.
"Not usually, she says we don't deserve nice things." Margo slipped her shoes off, putting them in the closet.
"Are you hungry? I know dinners in a short while, but if you are we can get you snacks. I know Y/n keeps the snack basket in the kitchen." Anita looked at the girls.
They nodded, "Thank you, Ms. Anita."
She smiled, "Of course girls, I'll be back in a few minutes, I'm here if you need anything."
She gently closed the door behind her, seeing you sitting at the counter making the snack basket, "So? How did it go?"
"Well, for starters, they don't know that they even have trauma in the first place. They share the same mother but have different fathers. They shared the same room, even after CPS came and took them from their mother. According to Agnes, their mother would forget to feed them and they would go hungry for a few days." Anita sat down.
"They would walk to ballet, even while in the system. Hattie wasn't any better to them, Edith says that once they were returned they slept in the 'box of shame' for a few days and weren't allowed to eat or move from there. Margo confirmed it. To them, that's normal. They don't understand what's happened to them." Anita ran a hand through her hair.
"I'll take the snack box to them, but this is going to be hard," Anita stood up as you finished adding juice boxes.
"I'm ordering stuffed crust pizza in 30 minutes, let me know if the girls want anything, I know they like the garlic bread, so ask about that." You stood up, going through the menu.
Anita nodded, walking back to the girl's room, love wouldn't be enough to help them.
