Firey was processing: He'd confessed to Coiny right before getting his shit rocked by him- though he felt he won that fight honestly- and now they're... okay? Are they okay?
He'd held two doors open for him and hadn't ended up with a second black eye, so maybe that was a good sign? He scanned the words of the textbook, fruitlessly of course. Even without all this complicated stuff on his mind he couldn't read for shit. He sighed for probably the tenth time in the last hour, and shut it again.
He stared out the window past Coiny's head. Rain and fog made the distance appear as a gray void and storm clouds above made it look like it was evening rather than very too fucking early in the morning. Hope the rain lets up soon, I don't wanna walk home in that shit. His phone was broken, so he couldn't call Leafy or an uber to pick him up or anything.
Firey was in the middle of another sigh when Coiny had finally had enough and kicked his shin. "Stop that, you look depressed."
"This is boring! what are we supposed to do here for the next... how long do we have to be here??"
Coiny stared at him with a deadpan expression. "Till noon. Just wait till the professor gets here and maybe they'll give us something to do, you'll be fine."
"Why are they late anyways? Who's forcing us to be here we could just leave." Firey slumped in his seat, arms crossed.
"You could just leave. I'm perfectly content not facing the admin's wrath because you're bored."
"What do you-" Firey cut himself off upon Coiny reaching into his shirt collar and pulling out earbuds. Of fucking course he would be sneaky about listening to music, I bet the professor wouldn't even care. "Hey!! Listen to me!"
"No," what does he mean no??? "You can keep talking, I just won't be able to hear you."
"Har har, fuck you."
Okay. So they're bickering again. That's a good thing, he thinks, things are going back to normal? But... that's not really what he... Are they just going to forget it all? Did Coiny even get that he confessed or,,
Firey doesn't want to brush it all off, but he'd apologized and that was all he could really do, wasn't it? He'd already paid the price of getting the shit beat out of him, so it was up to Coiny now. If they'd just forget it, or if things would never be the same again. Maybe their interactions this morning were just for the sake of them having to be in the same room for hours, and when Monday comes Coiny will pretend to have never known Firey a day in his life.
...
Firey decides to take a nap.
————————
He's awoken by thunder cracking outside. Fucking loud ass- Coiny's asleep, earbuds still in his ears. A quick scan of the room indicates that it's now a little past 11am, the professor is at a desk in the back of the room typing away at a keyboard (seemingly oblivious, or ignoring, their surroundings,) and Marker has gotten everyone else to do origami with him. Huh.
Coiny has a small paper swan in front of him, so he must've joined in at one point. Firey had been asleep for awhile, didn't know I was such a deep sleeper.
He looks back at Coiny again. They'd leave here in less than an hour, and then the fate of their rivalryship would be uncertain. Maybe the time away from each other could be good for the both of them, a whole weekend to ponder.
He gets up to join the others in making shoddily crafted origami. Blocky is making little paper airplanes with staples in them and throwing them into the ceiling, which will be funny until one of them doesn't stick and ends up hitting the professor.
—————————
Finally, noon arrives and Firey has three paper butterflies. He's proud of his work. The professor announces the rooms dismissal, apart from Marker for some reason, who's staying until 2 for his crimes. Everyone else files out, leaving Firey and a still sleeping Coiny.
Firey stands in front of Coiny's desk, squinting and contemplating how to wake him. He could be a funny guy and scream in his ear or something, but he doesn't know if they're okay enough to do that yet, so he opts to pulling out one of his earbuds and shaking him by the shoulder.
"Mmhuh,, what..?" Coiny sits up, marks on his face from where his cheek was pressed into his arm.
Firey tries not to become even more hopelessly enamored, "it's noon, we're free." he replies dramatically.
"Fuck yeah." Coiny stretches his arms behind his head, and tucks his earbuds back into his collar. Even though they're in a weird limbo of normalcy and fighting, Firey's still got a fat fucking crush on the guy, so sue him if he stares for a second longer than he should before going to grab his bag and heading out of the room.
He rushes through the halls, lost in his thoughts. He only comes back to his senses when he opens the front doors to see the rain has not eased up, but rather gotten worse.
"Shit." he didn't bring an umbrella, he doesn't have a phone, his house is a mile away. Lovely.
He stands there and stares out at the rain for a solid minute or two. He sighs and takes his bag from his shoulder, putting it over his head and finally taking a step out from under the entryway. Rain soaks his shoe, he takes a breath.
And then he's being pulled backwards, back under the awning.
