I shouldn't be up this late. But here I am, crashing off my second cup of coffee at one in the morning. Everyone else is asleep that I can tell.
I place my mug on the nightstand and sit on my bed, my blinds are pulled up so I can see across the street. I've been waiting for hours for a car to park, but the street stays empty.
I had a small glimmer of hope when I saw lights down the road, but the car was blasting music as it turned onto a different street.
By 1:15 I was officially exhausted. Barely able to keep my eyes open, I brush my teeth contemplating going to bed, my urge to see him still burning.
I rubbed my eyes and walked back into my room when I saw a car stop outside. My eyes widened as I walked up to the window. It felt like I hadn't seen them in years as they stepped out of the car and walked into their house.
Adrenaline surged through my chest, but my feet stayed planted. It took me a minute to gather myself before I quietly left my room, slipped on my shoes, and walked out the front door without a peep.
A cool breeze washed over my skin, goosebumps rising as I crossed the street. Tentatively stepping onto their porch, I lightly knocked on the door.
It only took a few seconds before the door opened and I was met with the exhausted face of Lily. "Oh sweetie, what are you doing here at this hour?" she asked in a yawn.
"I-I uh-"
Shit. Why can't I spit it out?
"Can I talk to him? To see if he's okay?" I gave her a pleading look as she lets me into her house.
She went silent, I assumed in thought about what I just asked. "I don't know how keen he'll be to talk. It's been a rough night, maybe coming back in the morning will be better." she reasoned.
Fuck. I can't wait for morning. I can't go to sleep without talking to him. Or seeing if he's okay.
"Please. It would just be a minute and I swear I'll be out of there." I counter, trying to urge her to agree with me.
Her slight bitter look softens as she sighs. "Go." she motions up the stairs. "Though, he hasn't spoken since the officers questioned him." she explains.
"Thank you so much Lily." I express my gratefulness, taking off my shoes. "Again, I'm so sorry that this all happened."
"I am too." she lets out a breath. "But go ahead Emery. Maybe someone like you will get him to talk. I'll be heading to bed so maybe I'll see you tomorrow."
I give her a small smile before heading up the wooden stairs. I try my best to limit the creaking, but to no avail as I'm too anxious.
There was a little floor space as I reached the top. Lily came up behind me and went all the way to the left while I went to the right.
I walked to his room and lightly knocked on the door. No answer, as expected.
"Jackson, it's Em, can I come in?" I ask, leaning my head against the door.
