Pit hiked up the stairs. He hopped down another flight. He stretched in the noon sun. His joints cracked. He sighed and fell onto his back. He was not aware there was no ground behind him, but a stream.
"Pit, get a hold of yourself," Palutena's voice rang in his ears. He scrambled out of the water, his mood even worse than before. "If you need something to do, why don't you go train some more?"
"Lady Palutena, I've done that pretty much every day," Pit complained, wringing out the end of his tunic.
"And every day you're training is a day you're not moping around."
It had been almost a decade since Pit's last adventure, and the peace and quiet had driven him crazy. Working up the ranks of Palutena's army had kept him occupied for twenty-five years, but now there was no higher rank for an angel like him. The sports of the gods had kept him occupied for a while, but he could only play the same games so many times before it became tiresome. He had trained to be even stronger, but anymore the only times there was any improvement was when he received some boost from Palutena. 20 9 10'4 25 9 3 14 3 5 4 16 23 4 19 15 4 1 16 19 10 19 2 19 6 25 4 16 15 10 17'5 8 19 6 18 19 21 4? He'd been involved with a couple of skirmishes with Viridi's Forces of Nature, but otherwise, all was quiet.
Palutena sighed and shook her head. "Okay, if you really need something else to do... I may have a little mission." Pit perked up a bit as she continued, "Nothing crazy, but it'll get you out of the temple for a little while. There's some small disturbance in the human world, but I can't identify it. I was going to send some centurions to check it out, but if you're up to it...."
Pit bounced up on his toes and fluttered his wings a little. "Hey, I'll take it! It'll be nice to take to the air again. I'll grab my blade and—"
"That won't be necessary," Palutena interrupted. "I can set up a door close to the ground, and all you have to do is take a look at a house. You should see it as soon as I drop you off." Pit's enthusiasm deflated a little, but he nodded. "I'll be scrying on you to try and get an idea of what's going on. It should be a pretty simple mission. The door's ready whenever you are."
Pit nodded again and started to make his way into the temple. He stopped after a few paces and turned to face Palutena again. "So, just out of curiosity... what if there is a threat? Like, something jumps out at me and I need a weapon?"
Palutena stifled a laugh. "That's part of why I don't want you flying. If anything happens, I'll get you out of there and send you a weapon."
"Understood," Pit shouted with a salute. He resumed his hike up the marble staircase with renewed vigor, content just to have a command to follow and a mission to complete.»»————- ➴ ————-««
Pit hopped onto the soft grass on the other side of the door. Sunlight streamed through the waxy leaves of the olive grove he had landed in. In front of him, beyond the neat rows of trees, a thick and dark forest lay, ominous and foreboding. He shivered and turned away from it.
The door to the Temple of Light had vanished, revealing a modest home with a barn and stable constructed nearby. He began making his way toward it, keeping an eager eye out for any sign of danger.
As he drew near, he looked for viable places to peek inside, deciding to try an open window. It sat just far enough above his head that he couldn't comfortably and sneakily snoop, but he suspected that would be of little issue; he was an angel, after all. No mortal would see him, and anything that could just gave him an excuse to flex his battle capabilities. He gracelessly jumped for the window sill and pulled himself up to encroach on the inhabitants' privacy.
He was oddly shocked to find a man and a woman bound and gagged, weeping on the floor of the abode. The man lay on his side, gasping, a trail of blood betraying the blow he'd taken to the head. The woman was struggling against her restraints, trying to shout at the man through the strip of fabric that muffled her speech beyond comprehension.
"Lady Palutena, are you seeing this?" Pit whispered. The goddess did not respond. "Lady Palutena?" Pit asked again, more urgently. He waited impatiently for her voice to come through to him. When she remained silent, he pulled himself into the room and made his way to the mortals. They couldn't see him, and he didn't want to scare them any more than they already were. He carefully tugged at the knots binding the woman's wrists until they came undone, and she frantically tore away her gag.
"Kardia mou? Stay with me, it's going to be okay," she sobbed as she untied her ankles. "We're going to be okay... I'm so sorry... please, stay awake...." She began to free the man, first freeing his jaw. He gasped, clenching his teeth.
"My head...."
"You're alright... you're alright...."
"I always... I knew she was troubled, but...."
"Oh, kardia mou. No one could have known she'd... she'd...." The woman's voice broke and faded. Unbound, they embraced, sobbing. Pit looked away awkwardly. The couple rose and stumbled away, mumbling an agreement to hide in the basement until the coast was clear.
Clear of what?
Pit watched them disappear, then began scouring the house. "Lady Palutena...? Did you see all of that?"
"Pit—town—is—save—" Pit froze, alert and confused. Palutena's holy light opened up above him, flickering oddly. The Palutena Bow fell to his feet and the heavens closed again.
Pit... town... the town must be in danger. But which town?
He picked up the bow and jumped back out of the window, trying to get his bearings. He settled for the direction of the big, swirling storm clouds that were gathering on the other side of the house, and took off at a sprint, his fear soon replaced by a dizzying levels of adrenaline and giddiness.
